Delegate It: The Absorption of Business
The business can happen while you participate in something else. You do not attend to absorbed things.
by the absorbed matter
“Google it” brought a business into your attention at the moment you approached a subject.
“Delegate it” can remove the entire matter from your attention.
That is the shift we need to understand. Its importance becomes visible when we stop measuring how much the machine does and examine what the human no longer attends to.
You do not attend to absorbed things.
The work can continue. Strangers can find one another. Commitments can be made and fulfilled. Money can move. An outcome can become Actual.
You can be participating in something else the entire time.
This is why I regard absorption as a change in the foundation of business. The relationship between an economic event and human attention is being altered.
Search Found the Moment. Absorption Removes the Matter.
In The Timing Hidden Inside Search, we began before the query.
Actual had met Expectation. Reality was already given. Attention had already been recruited into participation. The person searched from within that participation.
Search accidentally solved timing because the person’s approach supplied the moment. The business did not have to assign an hour to someone else’s life. It could be available when the person came looking.
But the person remained present throughout the encounter.
They examined the results. They interpreted the claims. They compared alternatives, made contact, resolved uncertainty, and carried the situation forward. Search could help them at every step while leaving the whole matter inside their attention.
Delegation changes that condition.
The person gives the matter to their AI. The synthetic prediction system, working through agents and tools, carries the activity. When the matter is absorbed, the human no longer has to participate in those intermediate encounters.
Search found the person at the right moment. Absorption allows the person to leave.
Begin with the Equation
The Reality Equation begins with the given relation:
R = Actual / Expectation
Attention is expressed through:
S = ln(R)
R is the input. We solve for S.
Now consider the exact absorption case. Actual and effective Expectation coincide.
R = 1
S = ln(1) = 0
No human attention is stolen by the absorbed matter.
This is the distinction established in No Human Attention Is Stolen. The predicted artifact becomes the actual artifact without the discrepancy that calls the person back to correct, amend, or reconstruct it.
The full denominator matters. Expectation contains Predicted and Ideal:
E = P + iI
In the exact case developed there, Actual equals Predicted and the Ideal component is zero. The numerator and effective denominator match. If an unresolved Ideal still makes the person revise or reject what appeared, the matter has not resolved to one for that person.
Absorption is therefore precise. A completed artifact and an absorbed matter are not automatically the same thing. Something can be delivered and still occupy the person continuously.
The test is the relation, and its consequence for attention.
Your AI Occupies the Absorbing Role
The human subconscious already gives us the analogy.
Much of your life proceeds without asking for your conscious participation. You do not supervise each familiar movement or continuously reconstruct every stable pattern. What is reliably carried beneath attention remains present in your life without becoming its foreground.
My essay AI Is Not Automation. It’s Attention Withdrawal. described this change from the inside: you stop carrying a process consciously because it can continue without you.
Your AI extends that possibility into economic activity.
Its fundamental role in this account is synthetic prediction. Agents and tools perform actions through which outcomes become Actual. The prediction machine and the action system have distinct roles. Together, a working system can carry a matter that previously required your repeated presence.
Your AI belongs on the absorption side of this distinction. Describing it as another participant in the human attention market misses its significance. Its value to you is that the matter can cease to require your attention.
You are not handing it a quantity of consciousness. You are establishing a condition in which your own conscious participation is no longer needed to maintain that part of your world.
Delegate Dinner
Consider the meeting dinner from Delegate It.
You want the people at the meeting fed. The relevant constraints are already known: who is attending, dietary requirements, the agreed spending limit, the place, and the time.
“Google it” leaves you looking for food, comparing menus, coordinating the order, and watching whether the plan will hold. You may get excellent information. Dinner remains in your attention.
“Delegate it” assigns the outcome.
The system can establish the headcount, find a suitable provider, arrange delivery, and handle a change within its standing authority. Search can occur inside that work. Calls and messages can occur. Other businesses and people can participate.
Meanwhile, you remain in the meeting.
When the expected dinner becomes the actual dinner, you do not have to reconstruct the chain that produced it. The food is there. The people are fed. The coordination has disappeared from your attention.
You may enjoy the meal. You may attend to a conversation over it. Those are different objects of participation. Attending to the people at dinner does not require attending to the management of dinner.
Absorption has removed a burden from the foreground of your life while leaving its outcome in the world.
The dinner, absorbed
The food arrived.
You stayed in the conversation.
The coordination continued without becoming your foreground.
Open the background: what still happened?
Opening this record is an act of attention. The record’s existence did not require that act. An absorbed process can remain inspectable without continually summoning you.
The Words Are an Instruction. Absorption Is the Result.
Saying “delegate it” can begin with attention. You state an outcome, establish the relationship, or resolve a new constraint. That moment does not contradict absorption. It gives the system something to carry afterward.
The disappearance concerns the matter once it is absorbed. It includes the remembering, checking, coordinating, and correcting that would otherwise keep returning you to it.
If every intermediate choice comes back for approval, you are still attending. If you must remember to check whether anything happened, you are still carrying the obligation. If the result repeatedly needs repair, the discrepancy is still recruiting you.
The Chat Window Is Not the Future of AI makes this distinction explicit: a machine can perform much of the execution while the human continues to manage the machine.
Absorption is the further change. The matter leaves the human foreground.
A genuine unresolved exception can bring it back. That is a fresh departure requiring participation. It does not mean the ordinary activity must remain permanently under conscious supervision.
When the expected world is being maintained, the system has no reason to keep making you look at its maintenance.
The Business Still Happens
Now look at the dinner from the restaurant’s side.
A need was met. An order was received. Food was prepared and delivered. Strangers entered an economic relationship.
Yet the person whose need organized the encounter may never have opened the restaurant’s website, studied its menu, compared its photographs, or listened to its pitch.
The business occurred without passing through those moments of human attention.
This is the break with the search model.
Search made an attentive human easier to meet. Absorption can remove the need to meet that human’s attention at all for the delegated matter.
The person remains the one being served. Their life supplies the purpose. Their constraints and expectations still matter. But their conscious attendance is no longer the mechanism through which every part of the relationship must pass.
The economy can act on their behalf while they live elsewhere in their attention.
The Attention Opportunity Can Disappear
The first three articles asked whether an interruption was worthy, whether its arrival respected the person’s moment, and how search received that moment through approach.
All three retained an encounter with human attention.
Absorption changes the premise.
For an absorbed activity, there may be no human search session into which a business can insert itself. There may be no comparison page waiting to be read, no sequence of offers to inspect, and no reason for the person to return to a dashboard.
The opportunity to serve can remain while the opportunity to capture attention disappears.
A business organized around being noticed will experience that as a profound loss. A business organized around maintaining what the person expects can recognize a different obligation.
Be capable of fulfilling the commitment. Make the facts required for coordination available. Honor the constraints already established. Resolve ordinary variation without making the person take the matter back.
The relationship becomes valuable partly because it can remain outside attention.
Trying to restore the old attention opportunity by manufacturing interruption would reverse the service the person delegated the system to provide.

Do Not Turn Absorption Back into a Feed
Imagine the delegated dinner producing a running commentary.
A restaurant was found. A menu was examined. An order was placed. A driver was assigned. A route changed. The food arrived.
Every step has been performed for you. Every step has also been handed back to your attention.
That is the problem examined in Notifications Are Just a Dashboard Broken Into Pieces. Moving the work into the background and narrating it continuously restores much of the foreground burden.
A record can exist without requiring you to read it. Verification can occur without demanding that you personally repeat it. Ordinary changes can be handled without turning each one into your decision.
The distinction is not whether the system is busy. It is whether you must attend to that busyness.
An absorbed system carries the normal case and returns when something genuinely requires the person. Its silence has substance: the expected outcome is being maintained.
The Largest Change Is What No Longer Appears
We are accustomed to recognizing technological change by what becomes visible: a new device, a new interface, a new kind of output.
Absorption is harder to see because its achievement is disappearance.
A responsibility that once returned to your mind every morning no longer returns. A category of coordination that repeatedly interrupted your work no longer interrupts it. A chain of business encounters occurs without becoming a chain of moments in your conscious life.
The disappearance belongs to that matter. It does not mean the person has no attention, no purpose, or no life. They are participating elsewhere.
That is why this can become one of the deepest changes in the history of business. More than the speed of execution changes. The requirement for human attendance changes.
“Google it” meant: approach the subject, find what you need, and continue carrying it.
“Delegate it,” fulfilled as absorption, means: this part of the world can be carried without remaining in your attention.
Actual and Expectation coincide. R equals one. The natural logarithm of one is zero.
The business happened.
You did not have to attend to it.
The opportunity to serve remains.
The opportunity to capture attention can disappear.
