Start with a book.
Not AI.
Not the labor market.
Not a debate about whether technology is a bubble or a revolution.
Just a book.
The Reality Equation gives the book three positions.
There is the Actual Book.
There is the Predicted Book.
There is the Ideal Book.
The Actual Book is in the numerator. It is past tense. It was published. It has a title, a cover, front matter, back matter, a table of contents, 473 pages, files, links, and readers.
The Expected Book is in the denominator.
Expectation is complex. It has a real component and an imaginary component.
The real component is the Predicted Book.
The imaginary component is the Ideal Book.
So the structure is:
\[ Reality\ of\ Book = \frac{Actual\ Book}{Expected\ Book} \]
And:
\[ Expected\ Book = Predicted\ Book + i(Ideal\ Book) \]
The Ideal Book has always been there.
It was there before a human author sat down to write. It is the book as perfect expression, the book the idea wants to be.
The Predicted Book occupies a different position.
It comes from the prediction machine.
Before synthetic prediction, that machine was most often the human subconscious. The author lived in a changing field of possible books. A character became more likely. A chapter fell away. A sentence moved closer. A title began to appear.
Picture a three-dimensional probability mountain.
The entire landscape contains possible books. Its shape changes while the author works. The peak is the book with the highest resolved probability at that moment.
That peak is the Predicted Book.
The single value represents enormous complexity: the title, cover, structure, voice, argument, scenes, paragraphs, pages, and back matter.
We are already comfortable with this kind of compression.
The price of oil can compress geology, shipping, weather, war, refining, regulation, labor, currency, and global demand into one number.
Sixty-seven dollars per barrel.
One value can carry the pressure of the world.
The Predicted Book can do the same. One value can represent the complete artifact the prediction machine predicts.
Now we can name what AI changes without exaggerating it and without dismissing it.
There is another prediction machine in the denominator.
It is synthetic.
It can predict the book.
That does not mean it takes action. It does not mean it is an employee. It does not mean it replaces the Ideal Book. It means a synthetic prediction machine can now produce the real component of Expectation.
Suppose the synthetic prediction machine predicts a book for a company’s customers.
It predicts the title.
It predicts the questions the customers carry.
It predicts the order in which those questions should be answered.
It predicts the examples, the chapters, the language, the cover, the front matter, the back matter, and all 473 pages.
Then the book is published.
No sentence is corrected.
No chapter is amended.
No argument is rewritten.
The Actual Book in the numerator is the Predicted Book in the real component of the denominator.
When the Ideal component is zero, the effective denominator and numerator are the same.
Reality equals one.
\[ \ln(1) = 0 \]
No human attention is stolen.
That is absorption.
This is the surgical definition:
Absorption occurs when the predicted artifact and the actual artifact are the same.
>
The numerator and denominator match.
>
Reality equals one.
>
ln(1) = 0.
>
No human attention is stolen.
Now change one sentence in the book.
The moment a person corrects the prediction, the numerator changes.
The prediction machine predicted one book.
The book that was published is another.
The Actual Book differs from Expectation.
That difference is surprise.
Surprise steals attention.
It does not matter whether the change took five seconds or five months. It does not matter whether the person enjoyed making it. The metaphysical fact is the same: the Predicted Book and the Actual Book are different.
The book was not absorbed.
This is more precise than saying that no human attention was required to alter the artifact.
The point is not a labor estimate.
The point is the quotient.
When the numerator and denominator match, no human attention is stolen.
When they do not match, the gap recruits attention.
That is why a small edit matters. Editing is not a minor administrative step outside the equation. Editing changes the numerator.
The same structure applies to any predicted artifact.
A prediction machine predicts Monday morning’s report. The report that appears is the predicted report. Nothing is corrected or amended. No attention is stolen.
A prediction machine predicts a project in the CRM. The project that later occupies the numerator is the predicted project. No attention is stolen.
A prediction machine predicts an invoice. If the invoice has to be corrected before it becomes the completed artifact, the numerator changed. Attention was stolen.
A prediction machine predicts a lecture. If the lecture delivered is the lecture predicted, the numerator and denominator match. Reality equals one. ln(1) = 0.
This does not mean that every prediction should be acted upon.
It does not mean consequence disappears.
It does not mean an action cannot be wrong.
It means we have a precise way to tell whether the prediction was absorbed.
We do not ask whether a company granted the prediction permission to become real. Reality is not waiting for a decision. Reality is the quotient. It is happening. It is existing.
We look at the numerator.
We look at the denominator.
We ask whether they match.
This is why AI can become an enormous economic event without ever being described as a synthetic employee.
The human subconscious has always predicted artifacts. A writer predicted a book. A salesperson predicted an opportunity. A manager predicted a report. An operator predicted the inventory that would be needed.
Now a synthetic prediction machine can occupy that position.
The cost of producing Predicted artifacts falls.
The number of Predicted artifacts rises.
And when the prediction is the artifact that appears in the numerator, the economic result is not merely faster production.
It is zero surprise.
No correction.
No amendment.
No gap.
No human attention is stolen.
That is absorption.
