The Immutable Past · What Is
What Is Unconditional
Unconditional is ordinarily the top of a ladder: strings attached at the bottom, none at the top, and the top is the best an offer, a guarantee, a surrender or a love can be. Read at the first clause of the circle primitive, the word names no top. It names a subtraction from a list of stipulations, made by someone on a day, and its content shows only in the cases it was said against.
The assumption folded inside the word
“un-”
A subtraction is not a destination. Taking a named stipulation off an offer moves it toward no place, because the unconditioned is not at the end of anything on the circle.
This piece does not say the word is misused, and it does not say a love, a promise or a guarantee is lesser for resting on prerequisites. It says what the word can carry once it is no longer heard as a rung, and what that leaves the person who says it and the person who hears it. It does not say whether the unconditioned is anything, or a source of anything. The foundation does not, and neither does the piece.

- An ordinary Tuesday
Tamsin has two letters on the kitchen table. The first says her place is conditional on her results. The second, from the other university, is headed unconditional offer, and she feels it in her chest before she has read the rest: that one is the better one, and not because of the course. Someone has taken a hand off her shoulder.
Underneath the word is a picture, and it is old and mostly decent. A thing is given, and conditions are attached to it the way strings are attached to a gift. Take the strings off one at a time and the gift gets cleaner, until at the end there are none, and what is left is the thing itself, unconditional, the best form a gift, a guarantee, a surrender or a love can take. The picture commits to four things. There is a bare thing first, and conditions come after. The conditions can be counted, so there is a scale from many to none. None is the top of the scale. And the top is a place a thing can be, so some offers, some people and some loves get there and others do not.
I do not think the picture is foolish. People who have had to earn a regard they needed know exactly what the word is for. But each of the four fails somewhere ordinary, and the way to see it is to use the word on a Tuesday.
Three cases the picture cannot hold
Case one · the letter that drops a line
Tamsin’s second letter removes the grades. It does not remove the date by which she has to accept, the fees, the enrolment form, the expectation that she turns up in September, or the university still being there when she does. She does not feel cheated by any of these, and I do not think a reader would say the letter lied. The word took off the one item she had been braced for, and she heard it as taking off the lot. Most of the letter is untouched and the letter is still called unconditional. On the picture, that is an offer at the top of the scale with its strings still on.
Case two · the garrison
In a story as old as sieges, a garrison surrenders unconditionally. The commander names no terms: no passage for the wounded, no promise about the town. The word is not a gift to the victors and it is not a virtue of the garrison. It reports that no term the garrison names will bind what happens next. Whether the wounded are cared for is now the other side’s to answer, entirely. A surrender that is unconditional is not a surrender with the strings cut. It is one with no hand left on the other end of them.
Case three · support that meets the rent
Joaquín tells Mira that he supports her retraining as a paramedic unconditionally, and he means it. In the second year the savings run out. He says, I am behind you, and we cannot pay the rent on one wage. She hears the second sentence as the first one taken back. He hears it as a fact that had been in the room from the start and that he had not been asked to name. Both are right about what they heard, and a rung has no way to say which of them was wrong.
The seam is the same in all three. The picture was built to rank offers by how much is attached, and the word is used for something smaller. Tamsin’s letter withdraws one named item. The commander names none, and so can hold the other side to nothing. Joaquín withdrew a demand he might have made and left standing a prerequisite he had not named. The picture needs the word to mean that everything is gone. In each case the word said that something named was gone, and said whose answer the rest would be.
The neighbours
This ground has been walked near before, and a few of the neighbours are close enough that a reader could think I am repeating them.
What Is a Precondition (2 October 2026) is the closest. It showed that a precondition which can be set and dropped is a stipulation, a dated mark whose maker answers for it, and that no preconditions can only be true of stipulations, since a prerequisite cannot be waived by anybody. I borrow that split in words and nothing more. That piece’s question was what a sentence like no preconditions can be true of. The question here is whether the word unconditional names a place at the end of a scale, and what the word does when a person says it. Those are different questions, and the second needs a clause the first did not use.
What Is a Requirement (28 September 2026) and What Is Thinking of Everything (4 October 2026) own the list. A requirements list cannot show that an outcome rests on nothing it does not name, and care does not bring a list nearer to complete. An unconditional guarantee is the nearest ordinary case to the second of them, and I do not run its argument here. I take no list. I take the word that says no stipulation is stated, and I claim nothing about whether any list is complete.
What Is Love (5 August 2026) says in one sentence that you cannot love without conditions, because a host is at an angle, and then makes a smaller request: that you not require the beloved to change before being loved. I start from those two sentences and I do not re-derive love. What Is a Promise (8 August 2026) took what a promise does forward, by naming a measure in advance and by setting part of another person’s expectation; I use neither, and I take the word and not the promise.
Two June essays are older than the foundation. Unconditional Love Is Not an Idea (10 June 2026) takes this very word, and parts of it contradict the foundation outright, so I supersede it in the open: the first item under Sources names each move I retire. Conditioned: The Word That Rebuilds Reality (10 June 2026) takes the root of the word. It is revisited and not superseded, and the second item under Sources says where it stands.
I searched the posts since 1 August for unconditional, unconditionally, no strings, without condition, clean slate, blank slate, from scratch, tabula rasa, no matter what and the unconditioned, with the content fetched and read as whole words. Unconditional appears in one post, a mathematical companion, in the sense of a claim with no added restriction. Blank slate appears in one stack essay. No strings, clean slate, tabula rasa and without condition appear in none. The unconditioned appears in the series pieces that recite the circle primitive, and in the love piece. No piece since August takes the word as its subject.
The primitive, and what it leaves out
I work from a small set of numbered primitives and results derived from one axiom, and I name each one I use. The first clause of S1 is the one in play: when the unconditioned is conditioned, a circle appears. The next sentence of S1 says that every point on the circumference is a condition. P6 defines a condition as a prerequisite in order for something to happen or exist, and adds that it does not cause, does not make possible, and does not happen. P7 says an idea is a named condition, and that naming does not create it: naming makes the relationship conscious.
Credit comes first. The folk word is right that something can be given with no price on the other side, and the foundation’s own love piece makes exactly that request. What follows is not a quarrel with the thing people mean. It is a question about what the word is the name of.
Read the first clause for what it says and what it leaves out. It says a circle appears when the unconditioned is conditioned, and the circle comes with every point of it a condition. It does not say there was a bare thing and conditions were added to it one at a time. It also leaves the unconditioned off the circumference, because a point on the circumference is a condition, and the unconditioned is what was conditioned, not one of the points. And it says no more than that. It does not say the unconditioned is a thing, a place, a ground, a source, a first cause or the divine. This piece neither asserts nor denies any of them. Where an older vocabulary of mine put a sheet of paper under the circle, I treat that as a picture, in the frame-language the foundation allows for its nodes, and I do not lean on it.
Now put the word on that. Whatever an offer, a guarantee, a surrender or a regard carries is named or nameable, and so belongs among conditions and among the marks made in relation to them. It is on the host’s side of the circle. None of the four is the unconditioned, since the unconditioned is not a point. So the word cannot be the name of a place that the best offers reach. Might it still be the end of a scale, with the offers getting closer? A scale needs a measure of how conditioned a thing is, and the foundation holds open whether conditioning comes in degrees. The first clause says that a circle appears on conditioning, with the unconditioned not on it. It states no ladder up to that.
Marked construction 01 · consequence, not doctrine
“Unconditional” is not the name of a place at the top of a scale. It names a subtraction from a list of stipulations, and a subtraction from a list changes the list and leaves the circle where it was.
Grounds. S1 at its first clause, for the circle appearing on conditioning and the unconditioned not being a point on it; P6, for a point on the circumference being a prerequisite, which no one waives; P7, for naming neither creating nor removing a condition; and the stipulation, carried in words from the precondition piece, as a dated mark. Marked as the piece’s own: the identification of the ladder in the word with a claim to a place at the end of a scale. The foundation states no scale, and the piece does not say there is none. Would be wrong if a measure of how conditioned a thing is were derived from the primitives with the unconditioned as its limit. Then the word would name a place, and this construction would go.
What the word does when someone says it
If it is not a place, what is it? Something a person does. A host says unconditional, and the saying is a mark, dated, with a maker. The precondition piece called the sibling of this a stipulation and said its maker answers for it. The word is the same kind of mark turned the other way. It withdraws the named stipulations the hearer was braced for, and it announces a response. Two things follow, and the second is the one I would not have guessed.
First, the announcement is about a response, and the foundation says a host can occupy a position from which its response to a readable condition is revisable, which is P5. So the saying cannot bind its maker’s future. Joaquín’s sentence will be kept or not, and whichever he does is a new mark. This is the part the picture hid: it let the top of the scale feel like a lock.
Second, the withdrawal stays. Records are write-protected: they update expectation forward and do not re-open, which is R2. Once the commander has named no terms he cannot un-name them. He can make a later mark that contradicts it, and both marks stand. So the word costs its maker something in the same breath that it gives the hearer something. After it, the maker has no stipulation of the withdrawn kind left to cite, and the record shows that. Withdrawing the price on the other side also gives up the hold on them.
And whose answer is it? R13 says agency is relocated, not abolished, and the person is the site of conscious responsibility. What Joaquín does in the second year is Joaquín’s. The word does not share it, and nor does the rent.
Marked construction 02 · consequence, not doctrine
“Unconditional,” said by a host, is a mark that withdraws named stipulations and announces a response that stays the maker’s and stays revisable. It cannot bind the maker’s future, and it cannot be taken back.
Grounds. P7, for the withdrawn stipulations as named; P5, for the response being revisable from the host’s position; R2, for the saying staying in the record and a later mark being a new mark; R13, for the answer in each case being the maker’s own. Marked as the piece’s own: the identification of the word with a withdrawal-and-announcement mark, which is a reading of its use and which the foundation does not state. Would be wrong if a saying were found that, with no further act, left its maker’s later response to a readable condition not revisable by the maker. Then a word could bind, and I would say how.
One reading of the love piece falls out of this, and it is mine and not that piece’s. Its two sentences, that you cannot love without conditions and that you can refuse to require the beloved to change, are about two different things. The first is said at the circle: a host is at an angle, so what she does has prerequisites. The second is the withdrawal of one stipulation. The second is within reach and the first is not a task. The ledger at the end carries its falsifier.
How the word is known
A letter tells you in a sentence. A regard tells you in years. In any run of cases where the withdrawn stipulation would not have bitten, a maker who withdrew it and a maker who did not leave the same marks. Tamsin, if she passes, is welcomed by either university. The word shows only in the case the stipulation would have decided: the grade missed, the year the money ran out, the thing done that the speaker had been braced against. Until a case like that has arisen, the record cannot tell the two makers apart.
This is why the knowing goes backward. A case met is met, and by R2 it stays met; what the maker does in the next case is a new mark and does not add to it. So the word is established case by case, and the record holds the cases that have arisen. It is silent on the rest. Someone told unconditionally cannot know at the saying, and a person who needs to know has no instrument but what has already happened.
Marked construction 03 · consequence, not doctrine
The content of “unconditional” shows only in a case the withdrawn stipulation would have decided. In the satisfied cases the saying leaves the same marks as its absence, so the saying cannot show it, and the record can show it only for the cases that have arisen.
Grounds. R2, for a case met staying met and a later case being a new mark; P7, for the withdrawn stipulation as a named condition whose bearing is read in a case; construction 02, for the saying as a mark. Marked as the piece’s own: the identification of the word’s test with the first case it was said against. Would be wrong if a feature of the saying itself were found that separated makers who keep from makers who do not, across cases that have not yet arisen, better than chance. Then the saying would carry content this construction says it lacks.
What it does not mean
It does not mean the word is empty. Withdrawing a stipulation the other was braced for is what a great many people need, and the relief is a sound response to it. A child, a spouse or an applicant who hears the word and breathes out has read it correctly.
It does not mean a love or a promise is lesser for resting on prerequisites. The love piece puts conditioned love as every hue on the wheel, each one exactly itself, and I take that in words as it stands.
It does not say whether the unconditioned is anything. The older essay’s creation story, in which something conditions the unconditioned, is not used here and is not denied. It is outside the argument.
It does not say conditioning has no degrees. It says the first clause supplies no scale that ends in the unconditioned. And it does not say that whatever happens has a prerequisite: Joaquín’s rent is a named prerequisite in a case, and the foundation holds open whether whatever happens has one.
And it does not say that anyone who has used the word has failed, or will. A word that can only be shown in the cases is not thereby broken in any of them.
What it costs
It costs the top rung. There is no highest form to reach and no rung to be accused of missing. You don’t love me unconditionally loses its measure. You only like me when I win keeps all of its force, because it names a stipulation, and naming stipulations is what the word is good at.
It costs the lock. Saying the word cannot make it binding, and a person who wanted safety from it gets less than the picture promised.
It costs the knowing. At the saying there is no instrument, and someone who needs to be sure has only the record, which may be short.
It costs a pleasant image: the unconditioned as a sheet before the circle, or as a source. The foundation does not say it, and I cannot use it.
If this lands badly
Unconditional is said of a parent’s regard, of forgiveness, of acceptance. This essay is about a word and what it can carry. It says nothing about whether you were loved or accepted, and no sentence in it should be read as telling you that you were not.
If the word brings back a time when regard seemed to hang on a performance, a piece of writing cannot treat that, and understanding a mechanism does not move a day. There is no schedule for it. People trained to help with this exist, a counsellor, a therapist or a doctor, and asking one is reasonable. This essay is the wrong tool if what you are carrying is grinding.
An ordinary Tuesday
These are practice and not grounds. They are revisable on evidence.
- Say what you are withdrawing. In place of no strings, say which: I will not ask you to get the grade, I will not hold the date against you. A named withdrawal can be kept and checked. Whatever happens names no case.
- Say what you cannot withdraw. Add the prerequisite aloud: and I cannot promise the rent. Naming does not remove it, by P7, but it makes it readable before it bites, and a condition that is readable can be answered in advance.
- As the hearer, ask for the withdrawal by name. Which part are you taking off? is a kind question and works on a letter, a guarantee or a person.
- Read the record, not the saying. Ask what happened in the cases that have arisen. If none has, the word is a promise not yet tested, which is no insult to the person who said it.
- Do not grade your own regard against a rung. My love has prerequisites, so it falls short of unconditional measures it against a place the circle does not contain. Ask the smaller question: which stipulation am I holding, and do I mean to hold it?
Unconditional is something said, not somewhere reached. The keeping is in the next case.
What is left open
- Does conditioning come in degrees?
- The foundation holds it open. This piece says the first clause supplies no scale that ends in the unconditioned. It does not say there is none. Named, not decided.
- Is the unconditioned anything, or a source of anything?
- The foundation does not speak to it. This piece neither asserts nor denies it and keeps any node as frame-language. Left outside the argument.
- Does whatever happens have a prerequisite?
- Held open elsewhere. The piece names a prerequisite in a case, the rent, and does not generalise from it. Named, not used.
- What would show construction 01 wrong
- A measure of how conditioned a thing is, derived from the primitives, with the unconditioned as its limit. Stated, so it can be held against the piece.
- What would show construction 02 wrong
- A saying that, with no further act, left its maker’s later response to a readable condition not revisable by the maker. Stated, so it can be held against the piece.
- What would show construction 03 wrong
- A feature of the saying that separates makers who keep from makers who do not, across cases not yet arisen, better than chance. Stated, so it can be held against the piece.
- What would show my reading of the love piece wrong
- The author of that piece saying that its two sentences were about the same thing. Stated, so it can be held against the piece.
