Human Attention / Reality Equation
The Queue Attention Enters
Expectation is not a blank space waiting for experience. It is a queue, already ranking what should matter next.

The interruption is a promotion.
A person rarely meets the world as an open field. They meet it as a ranked list.
Before the phone lights up, before the door opens, before a sentence completes itself, expectation has already formed a queue. Some possible Actuals are near the front: the reply that should arrive, the sound that belongs in the room, the face that should turn back, the next step in the task. Others are distant, technically possible but not yet authorized to matter.
Attention is stolen when Reality promotes something out of order.
The Reality Equation makes the promotion calculable. Reality is Actual divided by Expectation, and surprise is ln(R). If the Actual sits where Expectation has already placed it, the ratio is modest. The event is processed, filed, and released. But if the Actual enters with a priority Expectation did not assign, it jumps the queue. The eye moves before permission is granted.
This is not the same as novelty. Novelty says the new thing wins because it is new. The queue says the winning thing is the one whose rank changes the most. A strange object in a store window may remain background. A familiar name spoken by a stranger may take the whole body. The second Actual is not newer. It has been promoted more violently.
Expectation is complex: E = P + iI. The real component, prediction, maintains the ordinary queue of what should happen next. The imaginary component, Ideation, keeps another queue, one made of ideas that already have a claim on the person. Fear, duty, status, beauty, hunger, faith, revenge, tenderness, and ambition do not wait politely for evidence. They pre-rank the world.
That is why an institution can be boring until one word appears in the memo. It is why a market can ignore a thousand metrics and then turn on one phrase in an earnings call. It is why a relationship can survive weeks of noise and then reorganize around one silence. The Actual did not simply arrive. It entered a queue that was already biased by an idea.
To say that ideas have people is to say that some priorities are not personally authored. A person discovers that the line inside them has already been arranged. The idea at the front says, let this through first. The person experiences this as interest, alarm, devotion, disgust, longing, or certainty. Attention feels voluntary only after the promotion has happened.
This gives a more exact ethics of interruption. Not every interruption is theft in the same way. A child crying from another room should jump the queue. A lie crafted to exploit shame should not. A painting that gives grief a new shape deserves promotion. A feed that keeps discovering the smallest wound with the highest click yield is using the queue against the person who carries it.
The practical question is therefore not just, what grabbed attention? It is, what did this Actual outrank? What expectation did it interrupt? Which idea gave it the badge? And after the promotion, did the person become more free to see Reality, or less?
Rank is the hidden variable.
The same signal can behave like routine data, personal appetite, or commanding surprise. The difference is not only in the signal. It is in the queue the signal enters.
A diagnostic discipline
Audit the line.
When attention moves suddenly, the line has become visible. The response should not be only self-control. It should be investigation.
- 01
Name the displaced task.
What was about to matter before this Actual arrived?
- 02
Name the badge.
Which prediction or idea gave the Actual permission to move forward?
- 03
Name the aftermath.
Did the promotion enlarge contact with Reality, or merely narrow the person around an exploit?
Attention follows the promoted Actual.
Reality wins the next instant by changing the order of importance. The highest bidder is the Actual that enters expectation and makes the line rearrange itself.
