Humans Are About to Become a Rounding Error on the Internet
The network is not becoming less human. One human intention is becoming capable of producing an almost unimaginable field of machine activity.
One small instruction can sit upstream of thousands—eventually perhaps millions—of invisible digital actions.
Something rather extraordinary happened this year, and almost nobody noticed.
Machines became the majority users of the Internet.
Cloudflare had previously predicted that machine-generated traffic would overtake human-generated traffic sometime in 2027. It happened early. According to the company, the crossover occurred in May 2026. Cloudflare now says more than half of Internet traffic is non-human.

But that is merely the beginning.
During Cloudflare’s most recent earnings call, CFO Thomas Seifert offered a much more provocative prediction. If current trends continue, he believes that within five years non-human Internet traffic could be as much as 1,000 times human traffic.
His description was memorable:
The important part of his statement, however, came immediately afterward.
Not because human traffic will decline.
Because machine traffic will grow so enormously around it.

That distinction matters.
This is not the story of humans leaving the Internet.
It is the story of humans no longer doing most of the work on the Internet.
One action. One action.
The old Internet felt legible because human attention and network activity were roughly coupled in our imagination.
One sentence. Hundreds of checks.
A single request can branch into searches, comparisons, authentication calls, policy checks, calculations, and transactions.
The human stays. The field explodes.
The important change is not a vanishing person. It is the scale of execution that can gather around one person’s intent.
The Click Was the Old Unit of the Internet
For roughly thirty years, we built the commercial Internet around a very simple assumption:
A human would be sitting in front of it.
Someone would open a browser.
Someone would search Google.
Someone would click a link.
Someone would navigate a menu.
Someone would fill out a form.
Someone would compare products.
Someone would check availability.
Someone would move information from one system to another.
Someone would eventually press the button.
Almost everything we built reflected this assumption.
Websites were designed to be seen.
Applications were designed to be operated.
Advertisements were designed to be noticed.
Search engines were designed to send humans somewhere else.
The fundamental unit of economic activity was therefore something resembling a human interaction: a page view, click, impression, session, download or conversion.
AI changes the unit.
The new unit is the task.
And tasks generate vastly more machine activity than clicks ever could.
Imagine telling your AI:
“Find the best nonstop flight to New York next Tuesday morning, make sure I can be downtown before 10:00, stay within my normal budget, and book it.”
You performed one human action.
Behind that action, the machine might perform hundreds or thousands.
It could query airlines, inspect schedules, compare fares, check historical preferences, examine your calendar, evaluate airports, calculate travel time, check seat availability, authenticate accounts and execute a transaction.
One sentence from you could generate an enormous amount of Internet traffic.
And you never saw any of it.
That is the Internet Cloudflare is beginning to observe.
We Are Not Removing the Human. We Are Removing Human Attention.
This is where much of the discussion about AI goes wrong.
We continue asking whether AI will replace humans.
That is usually the wrong level of analysis.
Something subtler is happening.
AI is absorbing the requirement for human attention.
Consider something as mundane as checking whether a package has shipped.
Today you might open an email, find the tracking number, click the carrier’s website, wait for the page to load, read the status and perhaps check again tomorrow.
Those are Internet transactions generated by you.
Your AI does not need to operate that way.
It can quietly check the shipment periodically. It can communicate with the carrier’s system. It can compare the expected arrival with your calendar.
And unless something unusual occurs, it never needs to tell you anything.
A hundred machine interactions may occur precisely so that zero human interactions are required.
That is a profound inversion.
For the first three decades of the commercial Internet, computers waited for us.
We are entering an Internet in which computers increasingly operate continuously on our behalf.
The human becomes the source of intent rather than the source of every action.
The Internet Is Becoming a Synthetic Subconscious
This is why I increasingly think of AI as a synthetic subconscious.
Your biological subconscious performs an astonishing amount of work without asking for your attention.
It regulates your heartbeat.
It adjusts your breathing.
It maintains balance.
It processes sensory information.
It predicts constantly.
You are not presented with a dashboard showing your heart rate every second.
That would defeat the purpose.
Your conscious attention is summoned when something requires it.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to perform the same function for our digital lives.
Your AI will monitor your calendar, money, communications, travel, subscriptions, purchases, projects, customers, documents, commitments and countless other artifacts.
It will continuously interact with other machines.
Most of those interactions will never become conscious experiences for you.
They shouldn’t.
That is the point.
Cloudflare may eventually see a thousand machine transactions for every human transaction because our synthetic subconscious will be operating continuously while we are doing something else.
Or sleeping.
The Website Is About to Lose Its Privileged Position
There is another implication buried in Cloudflare’s numbers.
For decades, organizations treated the website as their digital front door.
That made sense when humans were visiting.
But machines don’t particularly care about your front door.
They care about access.
The website is merely one representation of those things.
An AI agent would often prefer structured data, an API or some other machine-readable interface rather than navigating a beautifully designed page intended for human eyes.
Cloudflare is already seeing the economic consequences.
The company reports that traditional search behavior is declining as people increasingly ask AI systems for consolidated answers rather than visiting multiple websites themselves. Cloudflare says that, for every hour people spend online looking for information, only about 15 minutes is now spent on the open web. It also reports significant declines in human traffic among some of the most heavily crawled categories.

This changes the strategic question for almost every company.
It used to be:
How do I get humans to my website?
Increasingly it becomes:
How does a human’s AI interact with my business?
Those are not the same question.
Search Is Only the First Business Model to Break
Google’s original bargain with the Internet was elegant.
Give us access to your information.
We will index it.
When somebody wants that information, we will send them to you.
Publishers received traffic.
Google received advertising revenue.
Users received discovery.
Cloudflare describes that exchange as increasingly broken. AI systems can crawl information, synthesize it and answer the user’s question without the user ever visiting the original source.

But publishing is merely the first obvious example.
The same transition eventually affects almost everything.
Retail.
Banking.
Travel.
Insurance.
Healthcare administration.
Education.
Professional services.
Software.
Restaurants.
Real estate.
The machine does not need to visit your digital property in the same way the human did.
It needs permission to accomplish something.
That means we are moving from an Internet organized primarily around destinations to an Internet organized around capabilities.
The Internet becomes less a collection of places and more a gigantic field of callable capabilities.
The 1,000-to-1 Prediction May Be Wrong
It is worth being careful here.
Seifert himself acknowledged that he has previously been wrong about the timing of these transitions.
There is no reason to treat 1,000-to-1 as some scientifically established destination.
Extrapolating exponential curves five years into the future is dangerous.
The precise number is not the interesting part.
The architecture implied by the number is.
Whether machines eventually generate 100 times, 500 times or 1,000 times more traffic than humans matters much less than the underlying shift:
Most digital activity will not require a human to initiate each individual transaction.
Once you understand that, many seemingly unrelated AI developments begin to line up.
Agents.
Personal AI.
Machine identity.
Agent payments.
APIs.
Computer-use models.
AI browsers.
Machine-readable websites.
Automated purchasing.
Persistent memory.
Personal operating systems.
These are not separate trends.
They are components of the same emerging architecture.
Humans Become More Important, Not Less
There is an amusing paradox in saying humans become a “rounding error.”
At the network level, that may eventually be true.
At the economic level, almost the opposite may occur.
Because those trillions of machine interactions still need something upstream.
- Intent. What do I want?
- Preference. What do I like?
- Judgment. Is this acceptable?
- Authority. May this transaction occur?
- Accountability. Who is responsible?
- Purpose. Why are we doing this at all?
Machines can multiply execution almost without limit.
That makes the scarce human contribution more valuable, not less.
The future Internet may contain trillions upon trillions of interactions between artificial systems.
But somewhere near the beginning of those enormous chains of activity will usually be a remarkably small human instruction:
Get me there.
Fix this.
Watch that.
Buy this when the conditions are right.
Handle this unless something unusual happens.
Build this.
Find out.
You decide.
The Internet is not becoming less human because humans produce less of its traffic.
It is becoming more leveraged.
One human intention can now produce thousands, eventually perhaps millions, of machine actions.
That is the larger story hidden inside Cloudflare’s extraordinary prediction.
Humans may indeed become a rounding error in Internet traffic.
But human intention may become the most leveraged input the Internet has ever known.
