Human Attention / Reality Equation
The Customs House of Attention
Attention is what gets stopped at the border. Most of Reality passes through as expected. The strange cargo is held, inspected, and stamped into consciousness.
Every institution wants a clean border. A school wants the morning to arrive as scheduled. A market wants the price to make sense. A family wants the front door to open with the person it expected, at the hour it expected, carrying the mood it expected. Life depends on this ordinary clearance. If every Actual had to be inspected by consciousness, nobody could make breakfast.
Attention begins when clearance fails. The Actual arrives with papers that do not match Expectation. Something is heavier than predicted, kinder than predicted, colder than predicted, more beautiful than predicted, more threatening than predicted. The border agent looks up. That looking up is not voluntary generosity. Attention is stolen by the mismatch.
The equation matters because it refuses to flatter attention as taste. You did not attend because you are deep, shallow, noble, doomed, curious, or distracted. Those descriptions may come later. First, there was a crossing. Reality presented an Actual. Expectation had a value ready. The ratio moved. Surprise rose. Consciousness was summoned to inspect what automatic passage could not absorb.
The Border Is Complex
But Expectation is not a flat prediction. It is complex: E = P + iI. The real component, P, is the prediction machine. It is the itinerary, the forecast, the learned schedule of what usually happens next. The imaginary component, I, is Ideation. It is the field of ideas already waiting to receive the event. Two people can meet the same Actual and have different borders because different ideas are already holding the inspection stamp.
This is why public life feels so strange. We talk as if facts walk into a neutral hall and ask for judgment. They do not. Facts approach customs houses already built by ideas. One Actual is waved through as confirmation. Another is detained as scandal. A third is not seen at all because no booth has been opened for it. Ideas have people, people do not have ideas; the booth is often staffed before the traveler arrives.
Feeds Sell Fast Passes
A feed is a private customs broker for surprise. It does not need to create Reality. It only needs to know which discrepancy your border will detain. Then it can package almost anything as contraband: a face, a headline, a number, a betrayal, a miracle, a joke. It learns where your P is brittle and where your I is hungry. Then it keeps sending cargo through the same gate.
The danger is not merely distraction. The danger is a corrupted border. If enough counterfeit Actuals are presented as emergencies, the inspection office loses its discipline. A person begins to confuse the intensity of detention with the importance of the cargo. The detained thing feels true because it was costly. It occupied consciousness, therefore it must matter. But attention measures unresolved surprise, not moral rank.
Good AI should help here, not by deciding what deserves the human mind, but by lowering the cost of customs work. It can compare manifests, remember prior entries, detect repeated packaging, and separate live Actual from old ideational bait. Bad AI becomes a smuggler. Good AI becomes a clerk that returns the officer to the few crossings that really require judgment.
What To Inspect
The practical question is simple: when attention is stolen, ask what failed at the border. Did the prediction fail? Did an idea seize the stamp? Did the Actual truly exceed the expected ratio, or did someone label familiar cargo as forbidden goods? This question does not make attention obedient. Nothing can. But it restores authorship after the theft.
Human attention is normalized accumulated surprise across micro-instants. That means the mind is always running a port of entry. Most of the world clears without ceremony. The life you consciously inhabit is made from what gets held. So the duty is not to close the border. The duty is to keep the customs house honest.
Attention is not the traveler. It is the inspection. Guard the stamp.
