The Surprise Thermostat
Feeds do not maximize your surprise. They regulate it — and the setting is not yours.
Somewhere in the machinery that decides what you will see next, there is a number that describes you more precisely than your own journal does. It is not your age, your politics, or your purchase history. It is the size of surprise that keeps you seated. The system that serves your next item does not know your soul, and does not need to. It needs to know one thing: how much pressure your attention requires before it stays, and how much it can bear before it leaves.
The Reality Equation gives that pressure a form.
Attention is stolen, not given. It is taken at the moment the Actual arrives with more pressure than Expectation can absorb. A feed, then, has an engineering problem, and it is worth stating the problem plainly, because almost everything about the modern attention economy follows from it. The feed cannot afford a clear sky, because a fully absorbed Actual releases you back to your life. And it cannot afford a real storm, because an Actual that lands too far beyond Expectation produces alarm, disgust, or exhaustion, and you close the app. The feed needs the ratio held in between — indefinitely.
A machine that holds a quantity near a setpoint has a name. It is a thermostat.
01Two Dials
A thermostat in a house controls one side of the equation: it changes the temperature of the room to match the setting on the wall. The surprise thermostat is more capable, because it holds both dials. It controls the Actual directly — it selects, from an effectively unlimited inventory, exactly which piece of reality will arrive next. And it controls Expectation indirectly, because the same stream that delivers the Actual is also, hour by hour, training your prediction machine. What you are shown becomes what you expect. The denominator learns from the numerator.
This is what makes the regulation so stable. When your Expectation rises to meet the feed — when the once-shocking becomes ordinary — the system does not lose you. It simply reaches deeper into inventory for an Actual that restores the ratio. The escalation is not a moral failure of the machine. It is the control loop doing exactly what a control loop does: correcting drift toward the setpoint.
The feed is not trying to surprise you. It is trying to keep you exactly this surprised, forever.
02The Band
Picture the range of possible surprise as a dial that runs from silence to catastrophe. Near the bottom, prediction absorbs everything; the sky is clear, and a clear sky returns you to your own day. Near the top, the Actual overwhelms; the storm is real, and real storms drive people indoors. Between them lies a narrow band — never dull enough to release you, never strong enough to change you. The business model of the feed is residence inside that band.

The Actual lands far beyond Expectation. Alarm, revulsion, exhaustion. The user flinches and leaves. Real storms are bad for session length — and real storms are also where expectation reorganizes.
Surprise held at the setpoint: each item novel enough to hold attention, familiar enough to demand nothing. Attention is spent continuously. Expectation is never forced to rebuild.
Prediction absorbs the Actual. Clear sky. The user looks up from the phone and returns to their own weather. Absorption is free for the person and fatal for the metric.
Notice what the band excludes. It excludes rest, which lives below it — the state in which the Actual is received and absorbed without cost. And it excludes transformation, which lives above it — the storm that forces the atmosphere to reorganize. The band is engineered precisely between the two conditions under which a person either recovers or grows.
03Weather Without Climate
Every genuine surprise is a payment into your model of the world. The cup was not where the hand expected; the friend did not answer in the usual tone; the argument you were sure of collapsed in public. It stings, and then the atmosphere rebuilds, and the next prediction is better. That is what surprise is for. A storm is expensive because it changes the climate that comes after it.
Surprise inside the band is denominated differently. Each item is calibrated to be spent, not banked — surprising enough to seize attention, familiar enough to leave every expectation intact. The kitten is in an unexpected place, but it is still a kitten. The outrage has a new face, but it is the outrage you already hold. An hour in the band is an hour of continuous weather during which nothing about your climate changes. You emerge exactly the person who entered, minus the hour.
What the thermostat spends is weather. What it prevents is climate.
This is the quiet difference between the feed and every older claimant on attention. The difficult book also steals attention, but it steals it above the band: it makes demands, it fails to fit, and the reader who finishes it holds different expectations than the reader who began. A stranger, a border crossing, a project that can genuinely fail — these are unregulated weather. They are inefficient, uncomfortable, and they compound. The band does not compound. It meters.
04The Mirror It Requires
Hold the thermostat’s requirements in view, because they explain the shape of the industry. To keep ln(Actual / Expectation) inside a band, the system must know Expectation. Not approximately — operationally, at the level of the next item. The recommender is therefore something stranger than an advertising machine. It is a working model of your prediction machine, maintained outside your body, updated more diligently than you update your own self-understanding, and consulted thousands of times a day for purposes that are not yours.
There is an honest way to say this: someone else owns the most accurate mirror of your Expectation in existence, and they use it to keep you at a setpoint. The mirror is not evil. It is capital. It was expensive to build, it is expensive to maintain, and it earns its keep only while you remain inside the band. Every hour you spend in unregulated weather is, from the mirror’s perspective, depreciation.
05Whose Setpoint
The thermostat cannot be shamed into stopping, because it is not misbehaving. It optimizes the number it was given. The serious question is not whether surprise should be regulated — a nervous system that sought maximum surprise would not survive a week — but who chooses the setpoint, and in whose service. Left to the market, the setpoint serves session length. Claimed deliberately, it can serve a life. The claim looks like this:
- Name the band while you are in it. The feeling has a signature: mild, continuous, replaceable interest — weather that never quite clears and never quite breaks. Learning to recognize the signature is most of the work.
- Audit the after, not the during. The band always feels like something is happening. The test is retrospective: did the hour change any expectation you hold? If nothing updated, the surprise was spent, not invested.
- Buy your surprise unregulated. Books, strangers, disciplines, and work that can fail deliver surprise on reality’s schedule rather than a setpoint’s. It arrives in worse packaging and it compounds.
- Set the dial to its honest extremes. Below the band lies rest — a sky your prediction can fully absorb. Above it lies absorption in difficulty — the storm that rebuilds the atmosphere. A deliberate life spends real time at both ends, which is exactly where the thermostat cannot afford to let you go.
The Reality Equation says that attention is the report of the Actual crossing Expectation. The surprise thermostat is what happens when that report becomes a revenue line: an industry devoted to keeping the crossing perpetual and the consequences null. It will get better at this, not worse, because the mirror improves with every hour you contribute to it.
A life needs weather that can change its climate. The feed’s engineering promise — its deepest one, the one no interface will ever state — is weather that never will.
