Nature is most likely.
The tree frog returns as a tree frog. That ordinary achievement holds an extraordinary lesson.

01 / The ordinary miracle
The world keeps its shape.
Look at a particular species of tree frog. Each animal is an individual. Yet the form returns.
The proportions vary. The markings vary. The circumstances of each life vary. Across those differences, enough organization persists that we recognize the creature. Nature repeatedly arrives at a coherent outcome.
This is what I mean when I say Nature is most likely. The phrase names a tendency toward recognizable continuation: what has worked, what the existing conditions support, what can become a viable whole again.
We are so accustomed to this fidelity that we usually look past it. An unusual frog gets a photograph. An ordinary frog gets a name. But naming is already evidence of the deeper achievement. We can identify the exception because a form has been established strongly enough to make the exception visible.
In “Most Likely, Least Likely,” I introduced the distinction through prediction, attention, and creativity. Nature deserves a closer look because her ordinary work is the foundation beneath all three.
02 / Fidelity with variation
Most likely leaves room.
“Most likely” matters precisely because it allows something else to happen. If there were no alternative, there would be no likelihood to discuss. There would only be inevitability.
A recognizable species can contain unusual individuals. Development can go differently. Environments change. Evolution changes the forms that endure. Nature’s fidelity operates within conditions; change the conditions and the familiar outcome can change with them.
The relevant observation is recurrence at a particular scale. The recognizable body plan is more stable than the countless details of an individual life. A tree frog need not be an exact copy to remain a tree frog.
This is a philosophical lens on continuity, rather than a universal law requiring every natural event to select a single highest-probability outcome. The question here is what the recurring form makes possible. Nature’s variation and Nature’s reliability belong in the same account.
That is why I have called her work probabilistic fidelity. Life can differ without losing the organization that lets it continue.
The individual varies.
The recognizable form persists.
03 / The whole governs the route
A frog is more than a sequence.
It is tempting to imagine development as a list of instructions: perform this step, then the next, until the animal has been assembled. But living systems raise a more interesting question. How is the whole maintained when the route is disturbed?
Michael Levin’s research gives this question experimental substance. His work describes how bioelectrical communication among cells contributes to the regulation of growth and anatomical form, alongside genetic and other mechanisms. The genome is essential; the coordination of the living tissue also matters.
In a 2017 planarian study, brief perturbations of bioelectric signaling altered later regenerative outcomes, including persistent changes in the tendency to regenerate two heads. The work shows that a tissue collective’s regenerative pattern can be changed through its physiological state.
For my argument, the striking point is that continuity is actively organized. The system’s tendency has structure. A recognizable completion depends on relations among the parts, and those relations can sometimes be rewritten. Levin and Martyniuk describe this larger regulatory picture in their account of the bioelectric code.
In “What Biology Already Knows,” I approached this through the question of stopping: how a living system distinguishes unfinished from complete. Most likely must therefore mean more than blindly taking another familiar step. Nature’s fidelity includes the organization that makes the steps amount to a body.
Within my Reality Equation framework, I call the completed architecture a blueprint associated with the Immutable Past. The future remains pure potential; an actual completion enters one settled history. That temporal interpretation is mine. The biological research supplies evidence about coordination and pattern memory.
04 / What surprise borrows
The exception needs a world.
The importance of most likely becomes especially clear when we turn to attention. A departure can take the foreground because something dependable has already become the background.
One strange sound stands out against a familiar room. One unexpected word turns a sentence. One unusual form catches the eye among forms we recognize. The interruption borrows its force from the continuity it interrupts.
If everything changed at once, there would be no settled pattern against which to recognize the consequential difference. We would have difficulty separating a signal from the rest of the disturbance.
This is why the most likely often disappears from experience even while it supports experience. We attend to what deviates. Meanwhile, the reliable world supplies the expectation that makes deviation legible. Nature can hold our attention through beauty, too; the point is that disruption depends on a reference.
See what the exception borrows.
A round mark interrupts a field of leaves. Remove the repeating field and observe what happens to the mark’s meaning.
05 / Reliability is valuable
Ordinary is an achievement.
Our fascination with the unusual can make the likely seem inferior. We begin using “predictable” as a criticism. Yet most of what allows us to live is valuable because it can be counted on.
A body that sustains its ordinary functions gives a person room to think about something else. A dependable structure gives an architect room to explore its form. A familiar musical language gives a composer something to bend. Continuity supplies the conditions in which departure can become useful.
Creative work relies on a great deal of reliable work. The question is which convention deserves to move and which continuity the new form must preserve. An unexpected building still needs to stand. An unfamiliar instrument still needs a relation between a player’s action and the sound.
The least likely earns its importance when it makes a better relation possible. Nature teaches the other half of that lesson: a good relation must also endure.
For life
Recurring organization lets a living system continue through individual differences.
For attention
A dependable background makes a departure recognizable.
For creativity
A stable foundation lets a meaningful difference be developed and sustained.
06 / The AI implication
Begin with its tendency.
This is also a useful way to approach what I call alien intelligence. Prediction draws on the patterns available to it. A familiar request can receive a familiar continuation, fluently and convincingly.
The parallel with Nature is a lens on that tendency, not an identity between a model and an organism. AI can generate surprising alternatives. People can repeat conventions. What matters is understanding the conditions under which we are working.
For a dependable task, continuity is often the desired result. For a creative task, identify the assumption that needs to change. Give the exploration a direction and specify what must continue to work. More variation supplies candidates; judgment decides which departure deserves development.
Nature makes the value of that partnership easier to see. We need both the capacity to sustain a form and the capacity to reconsider it. Asking for novelty everywhere would destroy the dependable background that gives novelty its significance.
07 / What deserves to return?
The next ordinary.
A successful departure eventually becomes something we can rely on.
It is learned, repeated, refined, and carried forward. What once surprised us begins to support us. Its novelty fades while its usefulness remains. The creative achievement has become part of the next ordinary.
That is the importance of saying Nature is most likely. It restores our respect for the continuity we too easily overlook. Nature keeps arriving at forms that can hold together. Attention recognizes what differs. Creativity asks whether a different form deserves to join what endures.
The tree frog returns as a tree frog. Before we hurry toward the exception, we should notice what an achievement that is.
