The Working Demonstration
The fair test for an emerging personal stack is not a list of tools or a polished answer. It is a small piece of work whose method can be seen, questioned, and improved.

A working demonstration is a bounded task that lets a person show how their stack turns a real situation into a checkable decision.
The app-to-stack transition changes what education and hiring can reasonably ask people to prove. In the application era, a credential often stood in for familiarity: this person knows the software, completed the course, or can operate the employer’s chosen interface. That evidence still has value. But it does not reveal whether someone can assemble changing tools, sources, judgment, and feedback into a capability that holds up when the interface changes.
That is the more consequential skill described by The First Stack Generation. Stack People do not merely get answers from systems. They learn to form a working method around a question, decide what the method may use, inspect its output, and alter it when reality exposes a weakness.
A Stack Person’s strongest credential is not “I use AI.” It is “I can show how an AI-assisted method earns trust, finds its limits, and changes when challenged.”
Three marks of a fair demonstration.
The answer alone is not enough.
Mark 01
Start with a bounded situation.
Give the person a modest, relevant problem with known limits: a short client brief, a research comparison, a scheduling conflict, or a plan that must respect a stated policy. The task should reward judgment, not private data, unpaid speculation, or access to a proprietary tool collection.
Mark 02
Ask for the route, not only the result.
Let the person name their sources, assumptions, checks, and points of human decision. This is not a demand for a private diary of every keystroke. It is enough context to make the work legible and to distinguish an examined method from a lucky output.
Mark 03
Introduce a correction.
Change one relevant condition, question one source, or surface a missed constraint. The revealing moment is not whether the first answer was perfect. It is whether the person can revise the stack without hiding the revision or treating the tool’s first response as final authority.
02 / beyond the tool list
A resume of apps says too little.
App People are often asked to advertise fluency in fixed products: a spreadsheet, a design suite, a customer database. It is a sensible shorthand when work arrives through a stable interface. The app-to-stack world makes the shorthand weaker. A named model or automation platform may be swapped, connected differently, or unavailable next year. A person who can only repeat a feature list is vulnerable to the next interface change.
The opposite mistake is to treat Stack People as mysterious geniuses who need no structure. They do. Their structure is simply more portable: a way to define a question, select lawful and useful inputs, establish a check, preserve a boundary, and make a decision available for review. A working demonstration looks for that structure without requiring the evaluator to certify a particular brand of software.
This also keeps the term Stack People honest. The stack is not a pile of subscriptions. It is a changing arrangement of tools in service of a method for which a person can answer.
03 / education can teach it
Teach the revision, not the performance.
Schools and training programs could make this competence visible without turning every assignment into an AI spectacle. A student might begin with a question, use approved resources, state the limits of assistance, and submit a brief note about one correction they made after testing a claim. The artifact is not proof that a machine did the work. It is proof that a learner can direct and evaluate assistance while remaining responsible for the conclusion.
That matters because unequal access will otherwise become unequal legibility. People with private tutors, expensive subscriptions, and time to experiment will arrive with polished outputs. A fair working demonstration gives more weight to an explainable route and a thoughtful revision than to the glamour of the initial result. It makes room for people to learn the practice in public rather than asking them to arrive already equipped with a hidden stack.
04 / the organizational return
The manager becomes a reader of methods.
For organizations, this does not mean extracting a candidate’s personal prompts, private context, or accumulated professional memory. A good test respects confidentiality and pays for meaningful work. It asks whether a person can construct a reliable small process inside clear conditions. If the role is collaborative, the demonstration can also show what the person would share with a team and what should remain personal.
Managers will need the same discipline after hiring. A stack-aware employee should be able to explain a consequential routine, invite correction, and state who may alter it. The organization, in turn, should give the employee time and authority to revise the routine when it fails. Otherwise it will hire for visible capability while rewarding invisible shortcuts.
