The Phase Lock of Attention
Attention is not drawn to the loudest signal. It is stolen when Reality arrives out of phase with the world a person was already receiving.
A room can be noisy without stealing attention. A train can pass. A refrigerator can hum. A crowd can blur itself into weather. The Actual is present, but it has found a phase relationship with Expectation: not identical, not absent, just sufficiently settled that consciousness does not have to keep paying for it.
This is one reason attention is misunderstood when it is treated as simple novelty. Novelty is only a rough public name for a private calculation. The same bell that wakes one person may disappear for another. The same sentence can be obvious, insulting, liberating, or invisible. The object is not bidding by itself. It is bidding through the ratio between what arrives and what the Actualizer was already prepared to receive.
Surprise = ln(R)
Expectation = P + iI
Prediction, the real part of Expectation, gives the world a carrier wave. It says: this is approximately the room, the day, the face, the task, the political category, the kind of email, the kind of ache in the body. Ideation, the imaginary part, gives that carrier its bias. It says which meanings are waiting nearby, which ideas already have a claim on the receiver, which possible interpretations are ready to become the room.
When Actual and Expectation stay in phase, experience becomes inhabitable. This is not deadness. It is mercy. A mind that had to attend to every accurate prediction would be trapped in permanent glare. Absorption is the good disappearance of what prediction can carry. The staircase vanishes beneath the foot because it is doing its job.
The lock breaks privately
Surprise begins when that lock breaks. The friend uses the wrong tone. The market ignores the obvious catalyst. The child answers like an adult. The machine produces a sentence that sounds too close to intention. Nothing has to explode. The break can be tiny. But for that Actualizer, in that micro-instant, Actual has slipped against Expectation.
Attention is the accumulated cost of that slip. It is normalized surprise over a window of lived time. This matters because a single spike is not yet a life. A human being is not a meter that flips whenever the world becomes new. Attention gathers where Reality keeps refusing cheap settlement, where the receiver cannot restore phase without conscious work.
The imaginary component explains why two people can be phase-locked to different worlds while standing in the same place. Ideas are not ornaments inside a private head. Ideas have people, people do not have ideas. An idea can tune the receiver before the Actual arrives. It can make a harmless fact feel like confirmation, a correction feel like threat, a coincidence feel like a sign, or a new tool feel like destiny.
Feeds sell false lock
A feed learns to manufacture phase breaks. It does not need to understand the person in any deep human sense. It only has to test which Actuals slip against which Expectation. Outrage is one method. Beauty is another. Tribal confirmation is another. So is the little open loop that says: you are almost in phase, keep watching.
The more dangerous trick is false lock. The feed offers the feeling that the world has resolved, but only inside its own rhythm. It gives a person a sequence of Actuals already fitted to the ideational bias it has learned to excite. The person feels oriented. In fact, attention has been rented to a machine that keeps deciding what counts as phase.
Good AI should do the opposite. It should help expose the carrier wave. It should show the prediction that was assumed, the idea that was tuning the room, and the Actual that did or did not deserve the interruption. The best tool is not the one that keeps stealing the receiver back to itself. It is the one that returns phase authority to the human being.
To govern attention, then, is not to avoid surprise. That would be a wish for anesthesia. The task is to ask a harder question: who is allowed to decide when the lock has broken? If Reality breaks it, attention is doing its sacred work. If a system breaks it only to keep bidding, the human is being charged for a signal that never meant to become truth.
