The Human Becomes the Set
The application used to contain you. Artificial intelligence turns the computational world inside out.
This is not software versus AI.
It is a reversal of the unit around which the computational world is organized.
In the software era, the application is the primary object. QuickBooks exists before you arrive. It already knows what an invoice is, what an account is, what a customer is, what a profit-and-loss statement is, which fields exist, which screens exist, and which workflows are permitted.
You enter that universe.

Modern software architecture is more complicated than one giant database. But the conceptual order is simple. Somewhere, a merchant identifier follows a company around. Orders, products, customers, payments, and inventory are interpreted according to Shopify’s ontology.
Shopify is the world. The merchant has an address inside it.
That arrangement defined the software era. You learned the menus. You adopted the vocabulary. You formatted your data according to the schema. You changed your business processes enough to fit within what the application knew how to do.
Software era
The application establishes the universe. The company and the person descend through its data model and permitted workflow.
AI era
The person establishes the universe. Intent determines which capabilities, data, models, APIs, software, or code are assembled.
Now John becomes the universe.
Not ChatGPT. Not QuickBooks. Not Salesforce. Not Shopify.
John.

This is the profound difference. There does not need to be one universal piece of software called Financial Management into which everyone inserts themselves. There can be a different financial-management system for every person.
Those systems do not merely contain different data. They can be different software.
Software-era personalization mostly meant the same software plus different data and different settings. AI-era personalization increasingly means different data, different rules, different workflows, different interfaces, and different software.
Your financial system does not need to resemble mine. Yours might know that you own several businesses, understand your personal definition of cash flow, recognize the way you categorize investments, know which accountant handles which entity, and understand which anomalies deserve your attention. It can generate the financial representation appropriate to the moment.
In the software era, you brought yourself to the software. In the AI era, software comes to the intention.
03 / Begin with the outcome
The request no longer names the application.
Open an intention to see the computational trace. The workflow is assembled after the person states the desired outcome.

Commerce becomes a capability of the merchant.
Shopify gives us the cleanest example. Today, the architecture is approximately organized like this:
Shopify is the parent namespace. The merchant lives beneath it.
The AI architecture turns that order upside down:
Accounting, commerce, marketing, customer service, purchasing, logistics, scheduling, analytics, and communications stop necessarily being separate destinations. They become capabilities inside the entity.
This does not mean identifiers disappear. Under the hood, there will still be identifiers everywhere. That is an implementation detail. The deeper claim is that the company identifier is no longer what establishes the computational universe.
Shopify can still exist. QuickBooks can still exist. Stripe can still exist. But they increasingly become resources available to John’s system rather than worlds John must inhabit.
05 / The economics reverse too
From one system for millions to millions of systems for one.
For fifty years, computer science largely asked: How do we build one system that millions of people can use?
AI introduces another economically viable question: How do we build millions—or billions—of systems, each for one person?
That was previously absurd. We could not employ programmers to write custom accounting software, custom relationship software, custom scheduling software, custom analytics software, and custom commerce software for every human being.
AI changes the economics because software itself can increasingly be generated. “Eight billion software systems” is not rhetorical flourish. It is the logical endpoint of moving the person to the center.
