The Economic Distance Between Intention and Action Is Collapsing

Every search begins with an intention. Buy something. Learn something. Fix something. Go somewhere. Hire someone. Make a decision.
Search did not complete that intention. It delivered a map of possible routes. The human still had to open the pages, understand the language, discard the noise, compare the options, reconcile the claims, choose a path, and take the final step.
That middle layer looked like browsing. Economically, it was labor. It consumed minutes, judgment, memory, and attention. Multiply it across billions of people and countless daily intentions, and the middle becomes one of the largest unpriced workforces on Earth.
AI moves the work.
AI Mode changes who performs the middle. A person states the intention. The system decomposes the question, searches across sources, compares alternatives, applies constraints, synthesizes a recommendation, and increasingly prepares or completes the action.
The cognitive route does not disappear. It changes substrate. What once ran through a human sequence of tabs, reading, recall, and judgment now runs through computation.
Google has already moved beyond summarized results. AI Mode can reason across complex questions, use personal context, monitor the web through information agents, build task-specific tools, and carry users toward action. In May 2026, Google reported more than one billion monthly AI Mode users and queries more than doubling every quarter. This is not a laboratory behavior. It is becoming the default interface between intention and the world.
Attention becomes computation.
The decisive economic conversion is simple: human attention becomes machine computation.
Attention is scarce, sequential, expensive, and exhausted by friction. Computation is parallel, repeatable, and increasingly cheap. When AI absorbs comparison, summarization, navigation, and preparation, it does more than save clicks. It returns the person to the point where human judgment matters: the intention at the beginning and the commitment at the end.
This is why the change is larger than a better search product. Search improved access to inputs. AI compresses the work required to produce an outcome.

The scale is measured in trillions.
This is a global productivity story. The value does not come from a new answer box. It comes from shortening millions of cognitive journeys, then repeating that compression across commerce, travel, education, healthcare, professional services, household management, and ordinary decisions.
McKinsey estimates that 63 generative-AI use cases can create $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion in annual value. Its broader analysis of knowledge-work productivity reaches higher. Google does not own that entire transition. Google is building one of its largest distribution mechanisms.
Enterprise AI requires budgets, integration, training, governance, and a decision to adopt. AI Mode enters through a behavior the world already learned. A person searches. The interface quietly performs more of the work.
The web becomes a supply layer.
The old web competed to become the destination. The new web competes to become the best evidence, inventory, capability, and fulfillment layer available to an intelligent intermediary.
Websites do not vanish. Their role changes. The value moves away from making a person perform the entire journey on a page and toward supplying trustworthy facts, distinctive judgment, real-time availability, executable services, and the final human relationship.
This is not an SEO story. SEO is one local consequence. The structural change is that the interface can now carry intent across the web, assemble the answer, and coordinate the next step. Every industry built around helping people navigate complexity is now exposed to the same compression.
The shortest route wins.
For twenty-five years, Google occupied the junction between a question and a list of places where the answer might live. AI Mode turns that junction into a working layer. It does not merely point. It reads, reasons, compares, remembers, recommends, monitors, builds, and acts.
The consequence is a new economic geometry. The distance between desire and execution contracts. Decisions arrive faster. Small tasks become negligible. Complex tasks become speakable. More intentions survive the journey into action because fewer of them die in the middle.

Intent is becoming the interface.
The trillion-dollar change is not that machines know more. It is that billions of people can now outsource the cognitive distance between knowing what they want and making it real.
