Teaching purpose
Students should leave able to:
- distinguish a condition from a prediction and an Actual event;
- identify Actual Storm, Predicted Storm, and Ideal Storm on the right-hand side of the Reality Equation;
- explain why the experienced real storm appears on the left-hand side if and only if all three are present;
- explain why people experience Reality, the quotient, rather than Actual directly;
- transfer the same structure from weather to a book;
- place AI in the Predicted component of Expectation rather than in Ideal or Actual.

Opening: Three different statements — 0 to 7 minutes

I am going to put three statements on the board.
First:
A low-pressure system is present.
Second:
There is an 80 percent chance of a thunderstorm beginning around 3 PM.
Third:
At 3:07 PM, thunder sounded, hail hit the roof, and rain crossed the street.
Are these three statements saying the same thing?
No.
The first names a condition.
The second names a prediction.
The third names an Actual event.
Students already know this distinction. You know that low pressure is not rain falling on your head. You know that an 80 percent forecast is not hail hitting the roof. You know that the storm that occurred is different from both the condition and the forecast.
Weather gives us a clean place to see the Reality Equation because the three positions are already familiar.
Condition.
Prediction.
Actual.
Keep them separate.

When someone says, “That was a real storm,” what do they mean?
They mean the storm as it was experienced.
It was frightening.
It was beautiful.
It woke me up.
It ruined the picnic.
It cooled the afternoon.
It was much worse than I expected.
Those are statements about the storm on the left-hand side of the equation.
The left-hand side is Reality.
Reality is the happening.
Reality is the existing.
Notice the -ing.
The storm is happening as Reality. The storm is existing as Reality. That is what you experience.
You do not experience Actual directly.
You experience Reality.
Reality is a quotient.

Expectation has two components — 13 to 20 minutes

The equation looks like it has two things on the right-hand side: Actual and Expected.
But Expected is complex.
That means Expected has two components.
It has a real component.
It has an imaginary, idea-facing component.
The real component is Predicted.
The imaginary component is Ideal.
So the right-hand side contains three required positions:
Actual.
Predicted.
Ideal.
For weather, those positions become:
Actual Storm.
Predicted Storm.
Ideal Storm.

Do not spend time manipulating the symbols. The purpose of the notation is to keep the three positions distinct.
Ideal Storm: the condition — 20 to 27 minutes

What is an Ideal Storm?
It does not mean your favorite storm.
It does not mean the biggest storm.
It does not mean the most dramatic storm imaginable.
Ideal names the condition or prerequisite for something to happen or exist.
In our simplified weather example, we name that condition low pressure.
Low pressure is not the storm.
Pressure is the condition for the storm.
The meteorologist may say, “The conditions are right for thunderstorms.”
That sentence points to Ideal Storm.
The condition is present. The prerequisite is present. But no thunder has sounded merely because the condition is present.
No rain has fallen merely because the condition is present.
No one has experienced a storm merely because low pressure is present.
The Ideal Storm belongs to the imaginary, idea-facing component of Expectation.
It is required.
It is not sufficient by itself.
Hold up the first card
Hold up Condition and ask:
Is this the storm?
The answer is no.
It is the prerequisite for storm.
Predicted Storm: the forecast — 27 to 32 minutes

Now the meteorologist says:
There is an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms this afternoon beginning around 3 PM.
That is the Predicted Storm.
The prediction may include timing, intensity, rain, hail, lightning, wind, duration, and location.
It may be extremely detailed.
It is still a prediction.
The prediction is the real component of Expected Storm.
It belongs in the denominator.
The forecast does not make the rain fall.
The forecast does not cause hail to hit the roof.
The forecast predicts the storm.
Hold up the second card
Hold up Prediction and ask:
Is this the storm?
The answer is no.
It is the Predicted Storm.
Actual Storm: the event of the Immutable Past — 32 to 36 minutes

Then 3:07 PM arrives.
Thunder sounded.
Hail hit the roof.
Rain crossed the street.
The power went out.
Now there is an Actual Storm.
The Actual Storm is the storm that occurred.
Past tense matters.
It occurred.
It happened.
It entered the Immutable Past as event and artifact.
The Actual Storm belongs in the numerator.
Do not confuse Actual with the prediction.
Do not confuse Actual with the condition.
Actual is what occurred.
Hold up the third card
Hold up Actual and ask:
Where does this belong?
The answer is the numerator.
The storm must have all three — 36 to 40 minutes

Now we can state the full structure.
The experienced real storm appears on the left-hand side if and only if all three are present on the right-hand side.

Ideal Storm.
All three.
The Ideal Storm is the condition: low pressure in our simplified example.
The Predicted Storm is the forecast: an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms around 3 PM.
The Actual Storm is the event that occurred: thunder, hail, rain, and wind at 3:07 PM.
The real storm is experienced on the left-hand side as Reality.
Reality is not any one of the three terms.
Reality is the quotient.
That is why we do not experience Actual directly.
We experience Actual in relation to Expectation.

Why the same storm is experienced differently — 40 to 43 minutes

Suppose the same Actual Storm crosses Charleston.
One person expected a light shower.
One person expected severe hail.
One person never saw the forecast.
The Actual Storm is the same.
Their Expected Storms are different.
So their experienced realities are different.
One says, “That was much worse than expected.”
Another says, “That was nothing compared with the forecast.”
Another is startled by the first thunderclap.
Same Actual.
Different Expectation.
Different quotient.
Different real storm as experienced.
This is the point students must carry forward:
Reality is not Actual alone.
Transition to books — 43 to 47 minutes

Now replace the word Storm with the word Book.
The structure does not change.
There is an Actual Book.
There is a Predicted Book.
There is an Ideal Book.
The Actual Book is the book that was published. It belongs in the numerator.
The Predicted Book is the real component of Expected Book.
The Ideal Book is the imaginary, idea-facing component of Expected Book.
A real book, meaning a book another person can experience, requires all three.
Consider John McGuire.
John worked on a book for six years.
He was in relationship with the Ideal Book.
He predicted versions of the book for six years.
The title moved. The chapters moved. The argument moved. The Predicted Book was present.
But John never published it.
Now I ask you:
What was your experience of John McGuire's book?
There is only one correct answer.
There was no experience of the book.
There was no Actual Book.
There may have been an Ideal Book.
There may have been a Predicted Book.
But there was no published artifact in the numerator. There was no real book for another person to read, enjoy, reject, remember, or experience.
You may have experienced John talking about the book.
You may have experienced his notes or his frustration.
You did not experience the book.
No Actual Book means no real book on the left-hand side.
Transition to AI — 47 to 50 minutes

Once the three positions are clear, AI becomes much easier to place.
AI does not primarily belong in the Ideal Book.
AI does not manufacture ideas.
Ideas have people.
People do not have ideas.
The Ideal Book predates the human author and the synthetic prediction machine.
AI also does not primarily belong in the Actual Book.
Tools, agents, connectors, and action systems may render, format, send, upload, or publish an artifact. Those are actions.
The heart of AI belongs in the real component of the denominator.
AI is a prediction machine.
It predicts the book.
Before AI, the human brain was the prediction machine that could predict a book.
Now a synthetic prediction machine can also occupy that position.
That is the precise change.
Not a new source of ideas.
Not Reality itself.
A second prediction machine in the real component of Expectation.

Weather taught us the structure.
Low pressure is the condition.
The forecast is the prediction.
The storm that occurred is Actual.
The experienced real storm is Reality, the quotient on the left-hand side.
The storm must have all three.
Actual Storm.
Predicted Storm.

If and only if all three are present on the right-hand side, there is an experienced real storm on the left-hand side.
We do not experience Actual directly.
We experience Reality.
Once you can see that with weather, you can see it with a book.
Once you can see it with a book, you can see exactly where AI belongs.
Instructor notes
- Keep the weather example deliberately simple. Low pressure is the named condition for this lesson. Do not turn the lecture into a meteorology survey.
- Correct any student who calls low pressure the storm. It is Ideal Storm: the condition or prerequisite.
- Correct any student who calls the forecast Actual. It is Predicted Storm: the real component of Expectation.
- Correct any student who calls the event Reality by itself. The event occupies Actual; Reality is the quotient.
- If students say John McGuire's unpublished book was real because drafts existed, ask them to identify the artifact under discussion. The exercise concerns the unpublished book as book, not the reality of notes, conversations, or drafts as separate artifacts.
- Do not introduce absorption until students can place all three storm components without hesitation. The companion exercises test that transfer.
