John Rector · A daily practice
BEing
Not yours.
Thoughts are no more yours than the sounds you hear.

The daily practice is recognizing that thoughts are no more yours than the sounds you hear.
You hear a bird outside. The sound is present in your experience. You did not make it yours by hearing it.
A thought appears. It, too, is present in your experience. You did not make it yours by thinking it.
Thinking is a perception. You think thoughts as you hear sounds.
Let this become normal.
At breakfast, during a conversation, walking down the street: recognize the same fact. The thought is no more yours than the sound.
When the familiar habit of calling a thought “mine” returns, recognize it again. A pleasant thought, an unpleasant thought, a brilliant thought—the fact is the same.
Ideas have people. People do not have ideas. You are in relationship with them.
Let that FACT become your normal way of being.
