Human Attention / Reality Equation
The Breaker Attention Trips
Attention is not the meter that notices every signal. It is the breaker that opens when Reality exceeds the load Expectation was already carrying.
The wrong lesson from the Reality Equation is that human beings chase bigger stimuli. Louder news, brighter screens, more outrageous claims: this is the cartoon version of attention. It treats surprise as volume. But Surprise = ln(R), and Reality is not a horn. Reality is the ratio between what happened and what this Actualizer was prepared to receive.
That preparation is Expectation, and Expectation is not a blank waiting room. It is a loaded circuit. The prediction machine has current in one direction. Ideation has current in another. A person is already carrying obligations, doubts, hopes, taboos, loyalties, unfinished sentences, and half-accepted ideas. Then an Actual arrives. If it lands on an unloaded line, it may sparkle and vanish. If it lands on a line already bearing load, attention trips.
Not brightness, load
This explains why another person can ignore what captures you completely. The same Actual enters two different systems. In one, it is merely information. In the other, it finds a live wire. A glance from someone you love, a missing word in an email, a sound from the next room, a statistic that contradicts a belief you were quietly using to stand upright: none of these has to be large. They have to be connected.
The common language of novelty misses this. Novelty says the new thing wins. The Reality Equation says the relation wins. Attention is stolen by the Actual that changes the ratio most sharply inside a particular Expectation. That Expectation includes P, the prediction machine, but also iI, Ideation. Ideas are not decorations on prediction. They are entities in relation with the person. They make some circuits sacred, some circuits shameful, some circuits hungry, and some circuits overprotected.
So the question is not only, what happened? The better question is, where was the person already carrying load? The market announcement matters to the founder because payroll is attached to it. The school text matters to the parent because protection is attached to it. The joke matters to the friend because belonging is attached to it. The same sentence can be harmless in one room and explosive in another because ideas have people, people do not have ideas.
The breaker is merciful
A breaker is not an enemy of power. It is the device that prevents power from burning the house down. Attention has the same mercy. It interrupts the rest of consciousness so the overloaded relation can be examined. Something in Reality has exceeded the circuit Expectation built for it. The interruption is not a failure of discipline. It is an emergency message from the relation between Actual and Expected.
This is why telling someone to ignore a charged Actual often fails. You are asking them to keep the circuit closed while the breaker is doing its job. They may comply externally, but attention has already moved. Across micro-instants, attention normalizes accumulated surprise. It does not consult the calendar. It does not respect your declared priorities. It goes to the place where the ratio just became dangerous, beautiful, or impossible to leave alone.
Test the load
One Actual, three circuits
The same event can pass quietly through prediction, disturb an idea, or trip attention. The difference is not the event alone. It is the load already present in Expectation.
Prediction adjusts: the model updates and keeps running.
Ideation resists: an idea defends its claim on the person.
Attention trips: the relation demands the whole room.
Breaker closed. Reality arrives as information. The system absorbs it without surrendering the center of attention.
Breaker open. Reality has struck a protected relation. Attention leaves the background and takes command.
Read the panel before blaming the person
Once attention is understood as a breaker, a more humane practice appears. Do not begin by judging what captured someone. Look for the loaded circuit. What prediction was carrying too much certainty? What idea had already claimed authority? What loyalty, grief, ambition, fear, or hope made this Actual more than information?
The answer will usually be personal, but it will not be merely private. Ideas participate. They recruit. They protect themselves through people. The breaker trips where an idea, a prediction, and an Actual meet under load. That is why attention is never generic. It is the signature of a relation becoming impossible to keep in the background.
The Reality Equation does not make attention smaller by making it calculable. It makes attention more intimate. Every stolen instant tells us something precise: Reality has found the circuit Expectation could not safely keep closed.
