Human Attention / Reality Equation
The Gate Attention Passes Through
Attention is not a spotlight you aim. It is the body being admitted through a gate after Reality has paid enough surprise to open it.
The common picture of attention is voluntary. A person walks into the world carrying a little lamp. They point it at the phone, the lover, the wound, the market, the memory, the god, the joke. The lamp obeys.
That picture is comforting because it leaves the sovereign self intact. It lets us say, I decided to look. But the Reality Equation suggests a harsher and more precise image. Attention behaves less like a lamp than a turnstile. It is a gate. You do not open it by wishing. Reality opens it when the ratio becomes large enough.
R = Actual / Expectation
E = P + iI
The gate is built from Expectation. Part of the gate is prediction: what this Actualizer expects to happen next. That is the real component, P. But prediction is not the whole gate. There is also Ideation, the imaginary component, I: the set of ideas already in relation with the person. This is why two people can stand before the same Actual and only one of them is seized.
The Fare Is Personal
A child hears a parent say his full name and freezes. A stranger hears the same syllables and keeps walking. The sound is not objectively dramatic. It becomes dramatic because it arrives at a private gate. It collides with a prediction, a history, a hierarchy of ideas, and a body that has learned what that pattern means.
This is also why attention cannot be purchased merely by novelty. Novelty is only one way of increasing Actual against Expectation. A purple cow in the street may seize the eye for a second. But a quiet sentence from the right person can overrun the gate more completely, because the relevant Expectation is not generic. It is complex.
Markets understand this better than most philosophers. The market does not reward the loudest announcement. It rewards the announcement that violates the price’s expectation. Earnings can rise and attention can still fall if the rise was already priced in. A tiny miss can dominate a giant achievement if the miss breaks the imagined line the market had already inhabited.
Ideas Stand at the Gate
The strange implication is that ideas are not passive content waiting for human selection. Ideas help decide what counts as a passage event. The person who has entered into relation with an idea has changed the shape of the gate. An architect notices load. A gambler notices streak. A theologian notices blasphemy. A parent notices silence in the next room.
This does not mean attention is irrational. It means attention is locally rational to the Actualizer’s Expectation. The apparent randomness of attention often comes from our refusal to model the imaginary term. We look only at the prediction machine and miss the ideas that have already taken up residence.
That is why “ideas have people, people don’t have ideas” is not a slogan about weakness. It is a mechanical claim. Once an idea has a person, it participates in the threshold through which Reality must pass. It changes what can be ignored. It changes what feels like nothing. It changes what arrives as an event.
The Ethics of Gates
If attention is a gate, then persuasion is not primarily decoration. It is gate engineering. The persuader tries to alter Expectation before Actual arrives, or intensify Actual until the ratio breaks through. This can be art, teaching, love, or fraud. The same mechanics can reveal the world or hijack it.
The honest version does not merely shout louder. It helps the other person form a truer Expectation, so the right differences become visible. The dishonest version distorts the gate until cheap Actuals feel immense. Outrage farms do this constantly. They do not need to make the world more surprising. They need to keep Expectation raw enough that ordinary inputs keep passing as emergencies.
Freedom, then, is not perfect control over attention. It is better gate maintenance. It is the discipline of knowing which ideas have acquired you, which predictions have gone stale, and which Actuals deserve the force they are being allowed to exert.
