Human Attention / Reality Equation
The TideAttentionCannot Refuse
We like to say attention is paid, as if the hand decides when to open. More often it rises under a force the self notices only after the room has already flooded.
Harbor reading: attention is the waterline of accumulated surprise.
A calm mind is not empty. It is forecast. The water is where the prediction machine said it would be.
The ordinary day depends on this mercy. The cup is where the hand reaches. The friend uses the tone friendship usually uses. The street stays in the same arrangement long enough for the body to cross it without composing a philosophy of pavement. Expectation is not a theory we consult. It is the sea level of the present.
Then the Actual arrives above the mark. The message is too short. The door is open when it should be shut. The name appears in a place where that name had no business appearing. In the Reality Equation, Reality is not the object by itself. Reality is the Actual divided by Expectation. Surprise is the logarithm of that relation. Attention is the accumulation of that surprise across the living instant.
This is why attention feels involuntary. The self may approve or disapprove after the fact, but approval is not what raised the tide. The attention went where the ratio changed. We do not generously give attention to the event. The event takes it by arriving at a height the forecast cannot absorb.
But the forecast is not merely a practical prediction. Expectation is complex: P plus iI. The real part, prediction, says what should happen. The imaginary part, ideation, says which ideas are already exerting force on the scene. Two people can witness the same Actual and live through different tides because the thing does not meet the same Expectation in each of them.
This is the hidden moon in the model. A comment about money may barely ripple one person and flood another. A mistake in a sentence may vanish for one reader and become unbearable for another. The Actual has not changed. The water rose because an idea already had the person. Ideas have people, people do not have ideas. Ideation is the distant body pulling on the local sea.
That also explains why generic novelty is such a poor account of attention. Novelty treats the unexpected object as sufficient. Human attention is more exacting. The same unexpected object can fail to matter if it has no ideational pull, while a tiny deviation can seize the whole room when it touches identity, love, status, shame, loyalty, fear, beauty, or God. The bid is calculable only relative to the Actualizer receiving it.
Markets understand this better than moral language does. A headline does not simply ask for attention; it bids against every other possible present. Its bid rises when it breaks prediction and when it strikes an idea that already owns a path through the person. Culture is full of tide engineers: designers, demagogues, comedians, artists, advertisers, priests, rivals, lovers. Each one tries to place the Actual where Expectation will be least able to keep the water down.
The ethical question is not whether attention can be stolen. It can. The question is whether the theft reveals something true about the harbor. Some surprises are cheap storms made only to flood the street. Others are the Actual finally exceeding a false forecast. In both cases attention rises. Only afterward can judgment ask what the tide was made to show.
Raise the same Actual under a stronger idea.
One event. Two expectation fields.
Routine tide: The Actual is unexpected, but it lands in a field without much personal force. Prediction adjusts. Attention rises, then drains.
Reading: Surprise exists, but the person can keep walking. The waterline stays below the door.
Spring tide: The same Actual now touches an idea that already has the person. Prediction fails and ideation pulls. Attention cannot remain polite.
Reading: The bid is higher because Expectation is complex. The waterline reaches the house.
To know what has a person, watch what raises the tide before the person has time to explain it.
Attention is not the noblest part of us choosing its object. It is the shore report of reality against expectation. The water tells the truth first.
