Make Claude Cowork your homeschool administrator.
A practical system for taking the clerical burden from pre-registration through attendance, portfolios, progress reports, and year-end records—without handing away the parent’s legal responsibility.
Parent: teacher + accountable adultCowork: the office that never loses the form
The year does not become compliant because a calendar exists. It becomes defensible when real instruction leaves an orderly trail.
The useful promise
Do the teaching. Delegate the paper trail.
Homeschool administration is not one giant task. It is a stream of small conversions: a decision becomes an application; a lesson becomes a log; a worksheet becomes portfolio evidence; six months of evidence becomes a progress report.
Claude Cowork is built for exactly that kind of multi-step file work. It can read and write inside a folder you choose, build spreadsheets and documents, organize evidence, check a record set for gaps, and prepare finished outputs for review. With browser or computer access, it may also help navigate websites and forms. That makes it much more useful than asking a chatbot isolated questions.
But “does all the work” needs one honest boundary. Cowork cannot choose your legal pathway for you, certify facts it did not witness, substitute generated pages for your child’s work, or assume the parent-teacher’s statutory responsibility. Its job is to turn the truth of the school year into complete, timely administration.
The operating loop
Seven handoffs. One year that stays ready.
The parent supplies facts and judgment. Cowork converts those inputs into an organized school record. Give it recurring work by cadence, and the semiannual report stops being a rescue mission.
Research
Fetch current BCSD, statute, SCDE, and association requirements. Record source URLs and access dates.
Pre-register
Build the correct application or membership packet and a list of items only the parent can answer or sign.
Notify + withdraw
For Options 2 or 3, prepare the school notification and withdrawal materials using the association acceptance evidence.
Build the year
Create the 180-day calendar, required-subject map, reporting dates, portfolio rhythm, and high-school credit plan if relevant.
Capture
Convert the parent’s real notes into attendance and lesson entries; file student-created samples without rewriting them.
Audit
Flag missing dates, uncovered subjects, weak portfolio evidence, and deadlines. Ask for facts; never fill gaps by guessing.
Report + archive
Draft progress reports from verified evidence, prepare any association submission, and lock a read-only year-end copy.
The folder is the school office
Give Cowork a narrow, legible workspace.

Connect only this dedicated folder, not an entire home directory. Put a short operating memo at the top: legal pathway, association, student grade, required subjects, school-year dates, reporting cadence, file-naming rule, and the actions that always require parent approval.
Store a source register beside it. Every time Cowork relies on a rule, it should record the issuer, exact page, date checked, and which workflow step the rule controls. That makes stale guidance visible.
Do not place Social Security numbers, passwords, payment credentials, sensitive medical records, or unredacted identity documents in the working folder unless they are truly necessary and you understand the privacy implications. Cowork sessions may process connected files on Anthropic’s servers.
Three prompts that install the administrator.
Use these as starting instructions, then replace the bracketed fields. Keep consequential submissions in manual-approval mode.
“Use only this folder. We are a Berkeley County, South Carolina homeschool operating under Option [1/2/3] through [district/association]. Read the current official rules in 01_RULES_and_pathway, build the folder system, a 180-day calendar, a deadline register, and an approval checklist. Cite the source for every legal or association requirement. Do not submit, sign, withdraw a student, or invent missing facts.”
“Process only the parent notes and student work added this week. Draft attendance and lesson-log entries, file portfolio samples by subject, and produce an exceptions report: missing facts, uncovered required subjects, questionable dates, approaching deadlines, and anything needing parent judgment. Do not mark a day complete unless the notes support it.”
“Using verified records only, draft the semiannual progress report required by our pathway and association. Include attendance totals and individualized progress in each required instructional area. Create a second document listing every claim and the file that supports it. Flag conflicts or missing evidence. Do not submit the report; place the review copy in 06_PROGRESS_REPORTS and wait for parent approval.”
The real automation
Make truth cheap to organize.
A good homeschool administrator does not manufacture school. It makes the school that actually happened easy to see, review, and report. Give Claude Cowork the narrow folder, the current rulebook, a recurring cadence, and a hard approval boundary. Then the parent can spend the year teaching instead of reconstructing it.
