The Weight Reality Adds
Attention is stolen when the world becomes heavier than the expectation built to receive it.
Most arguments about attention treat it as a light. It shines here, then there. The metaphor is too obedient. Human attention is closer to a scale that suddenly tips. Reality adds weight. Expectation was holding one load, and Actual places another load on the pan.
The Reality Equation gives this picture its discipline: Reality equals Actual divided by Expectation. Surprise is the natural log of that Reality. The point is not that big things get noticed. A thing can be objectively enormous and carry no attention if it arrives exactly where a person, a market, a family, or a culture already made room for it. Attention goes where the weight changes.
The load is private
Expectation is not just a forecast. It is complex: E = P + iI. The real part, P, is the prediction machine. It is the practical guess about what will happen. The imaginary part, I, is ideation, the charged field of ideas already in relation with the Actualizer. That is why the same event weighs differently in different lives.
A resignation can be paperwork to one office, betrayal to one friend, liberation to one spouse, and proof of decline to one political faction. The Actual is not multiplied into many Realities. There is one Reality value at the instant for the Actualizer in question. But Expectation has internal mass. Prediction and ideation are not two opinions; they are the shape of the receiving apparatus.
This is where the common language of novelty fails. Novelty says the object is new. Surprise says the ratio moved. A familiar sentence spoken by the wrong person can weigh more than a new technology announced by a stranger. A small silence can pull harder than a loud headline. Attention is stolen by the heavier ratio, not by the louder object.
Ideas add ballast
Because ideas have people, people do not have ideas, ideation acts like ballast in the hold of a ship. It can steady the vessel, or it can make a small wave feel catastrophic. An idea already living in a person prepares the floor under certain Actuals. It also loads the scale before anything happens.
This is why institutions compete so fiercely to name things before they occur. A name is not commentary after the fact. A name changes the weight class of the incoming fact. If a community has been taught to receive a change as progress, the same Actual lands on one scale. If it has been taught to receive it as erasure, the same Actual lands on another. The bid for attention is partly placed in advance.
Feeds exploit this preloaded condition. They do not need to manufacture Reality from nothing. They only need to find the ideational ballast already aboard and drop Actual after Actual onto the side that will tip. The theft is efficient because the person experiences it as direct perception. It feels like the event demanded attention. More often, the prepared expectation made the event heavy.
The ethical test
Good judgment begins by asking a strange question: what did this weigh before it happened? If the answer is “already too much,” attention may be carrying yesterday’s ballast. If the answer is “almost nothing,” then the new weight may deserve examination. The responsible person is not the person who refuses surprise. That would be deadness. The responsible person can distinguish a live increase in Reality from a scale that was rigged in advance.
AI matters here only when it helps unload the pan. A bad system learns which ballast makes you tip and keeps feeding it. A better system can separate the incoming Actual from the ideational freight around it. It can ask what was predicted, what was believed, what was feared, and what actually arrived. Used well, it does not seize attention. It returns the scale to your hand.
Attention is stolen, but it is not meaningless theft. It tells us where Reality has exceeded the carrying capacity of Expectation. The danger is not surprise itself. The danger is letting every preloaded idea pretend to be Reality’s fresh weight.
What did the system expect the Actual to be before it arrived?
Which idea had already prepared a meaning for the incoming fact?
Did Reality add new weight, or did old ballast make the pan fall?
To know why something stole your attention, do not only inspect the thing. Inspect the scale it landed on.
