The Graft That Attention Rejects
Attention is what happens when an Actual cannot simply be added to a life. It must take inside the tissue of Expectation, or the whole system inflames around it.
A person does not notice the world because the world is vivid. A person notices the part of the world that cannot yet be made continuous with what that person was already becoming.
The Reality Equation is usually introduced as a division: Reality equals Actual over Expectation, and Surprise is the natural log of that ratio. But another picture sits inside the math. Expectation is living tissue. It is not a flat forecast waiting to be corrected by facts. It is a growing organism made from prediction and ideation, from what the Actualizer thinks will happen and from the ideas that already have a claim on the Actualizer.
The Actual arrives like a graft. It can take. It can be rejected. It can heal badly. The attention stolen by the encounter is the cost of that biological test.
Expectation = P + iI
Surprise = ln(Reality)
Prediction is the cut surface
The real component of Expectation, P, is the cut surface prepared by prediction. It says: this is the shape of the next moment. The bus will arrive. The voice will sound kind. The market will behave like markets behaved yesterday. The child will come home at the usual hour. Prediction is not only intellectual. It is muscular, spatial, social, economic. A body leans its whole future toward a probable Actual.
When the Actual fits, almost nothing is stolen. The graft takes. There may be motion, but there is little conscious theft. You keep walking because the sidewalk is where the foot expected it to be. You keep listening because the sentence lands in the grammar already open to receive it.
When the Actual does not fit, attention rushes to the wound. This is not a metaphor for novelty. A new thing that arrives exactly where the organism made room for it may pass through nearly unnoticed. An old thing in the wrong place can seize the entire mind.
Ideation decides compatibility
The imaginary component, I, is stranger. It is the ideational field that decides what kind of graft this Actual appears to be. Ideas are not decorations attached to private minds. Ideas have people, people do not have ideas. The same event can be a threat, a sign, a joke, a betrayal, a proof, or a calling depending on which ideas are already rooted in the Actualizer.
This is why attention cannot be reduced to model prediction error. Two people can receive the same Actual with similar statistical expectations and radically different attention. The ratio changes because Expectation is complex. The fact does not meet only a forecast. It meets an idea that may defend itself.
A political slogan, a scientific result, a flirtatious glance, a diagnosis, an apology, an image from childhood: each comes looking for living tissue. It may be absorbed by the predictive surface, but it may also be judged by an idea that says, no, this does not belong here, or yes, this proves what I already am.
The feed farms rejection
Modern feeds make money by presenting Actuals as incompatible grafts. They do not need to invent surprise from nothing. They only need to find the ideational surfaces where rejection is likely, then keep pressing the cut. The content says: this cannot be allowed inside your picture of the world. The person experiences attention as vigilance, but the platform experiences it as yield.
This is one reason outrage feels intimate. It is not simply anger at an object. It is the sensation of an idea defending its host tissue. The Actual has arrived, and the system cannot decide whether to incorporate it or wall it off. Attention holds the site open.
AI can lower the fever
Bad AI will become expert at graft rejection. It will know which Actuals cannot take inside which Expectation, and it will arrange them for maximum inflammation. Good AI has a different responsibility. It can slow the encounter enough for a human to see the cut surface: what did I predict, which idea is claiming me, and what Actual is actually asking to be received?
That does not remove surprise. It returns the person to the living question. Some Actuals should be rejected. Some should be grafted. Some require the organism to grow a new branch. Attention is stolen at the moment of incompatibility, but freedom begins when the Actualizer can decide what kind of healing is true.
Attention is not the love of the new. It is the living cost of deciding what Reality can become part of us.
