Human Attention / Reality Equation
The Threshold That Makes News
A thing does not become news because it happened. It becomes news when Reality crosses the private threshold where expectation can no longer absorb it.
The world is full of events that never become news to anyone. A branch moves. A server logs a request. A neighbor changes the angle of a chair by two inches. Reality is not short of occurrence. It is short of human entry points. For an event to take attention, it must cross a threshold inside a particular Actualizer: the difference between what happened and what was expected must become too large for ordinary absorption.
This is why news is not the same thing as importance. Importance is often assigned afterward by institutions, professions, markets, families, or historians. Attention arrives earlier and more brutally. It is stolen at the instant a person discovers that the Actual does not fit the shape their world had already prepared.
The formula looks spare, but it changes the whole idea of a headline. A headline is not merely a sentence about the Actual. It is an instrument pointed at Expectation. It says, in effect: you thought the world was arranged one way; here is where it failed to remain arranged. The better headline does not shout louder. It locates the larger break.
Private Front Pages
Every person carries a private front page. It is not written in ink. It is written in prediction and bias, in the real component of what they expect and the imaginary component of what they are already in relation with. Two people can meet the same fact and receive different editions of Reality. One sees routine. Another sees betrayal. A third sees evidence for an idea that has been waiting for a host.
That is the practical force of complex Expectation. The prediction machine asks, “What did I think would happen?” Ideation asks, “What idea was already making this matter to me?” When Actual arrives, it is divided by both. Attention is not generic novelty. It is the residue produced when Reality collides with a person’s particular structure of expectation.
The strange part is that many events have no power until an idea gives them a receiving surface. A statistic sits unnoticed for years. Then an idea enters the culture and the same number becomes unbearable. A gesture was always there. Then a relationship changes, and the gesture suddenly means everything. Ideas have people; people do not simply have ideas. They recruit attention by making parts of Reality newly legible as surprise.
Why Feeds Feel Like Weather
A feed tries to manufacture news by guessing thresholds at scale. It does not need to understand your life. It only needs to learn which kinds of discrepancy steal you. Outrage works when it makes the Actual appear to violate a moral expectation. Status works when it makes another person’s life exceed a social expectation. Fear works when a possible future overruns the expected safety of the present.
This is why the feed can feel like weather. It keeps changing pressure around the private threshold. The items are different, but the mechanism repeats: find the little window where prediction is confident enough to be broken and ideation is charged enough to care. The platform is not asking for attention as a favor. It is bidding for it by shaping Actuals into purchasable surprise.
But the same mechanism can be used with respect. A teacher can find the threshold where a student is ready to be surprised without being humiliated. A designer can reveal the one contradiction that makes a system comprehensible. A leader can tell people the truth in an order that lets Reality enter without becoming spectacle. To give attention back is not to remove surprise. It is to spend surprise where it clarifies responsibility.
The Human Editor
AI will make the production of plausible headlines nearly free. It will also make the simulation of importance cheaper than ever. The scarce act will not be generating more editions of the world. The scarce act will be deciding which breaks in expectation deserve human entry.
That decision cannot be outsourced to prediction alone, because prediction is part of Expectation. A model can estimate what will catch. It can rank the likely theft. It can even compose the sentence that finds the nerve. But attention, in the Human Attention frame, is normalized accumulated surprise inside the Actualizer. The human editor is the one who must ask whether the captured surprise should become care, correction, refusal, or action.
So the discipline is not to avoid news. Reality should interrupt us when our expectations are wrong. The discipline is to notice what threshold was crossed and who benefits from keeping it crossed. Attention is taken first. After that, it can still be governed.
The ethical question is whether the surprise is used to widen reality or merely to keep the threshold trembling.
