Attention Is Stolen, Not Given

Attention does not politely wait to be allocated. Surprise takes it first. Indifference cancels the noise.
We speak about attention as if it were a coin consciously handed over: I gave that meeting my attention. I gave the article twenty minutes. I gave the afternoon to my work. That description begins too late. Before attention can be given, something has already made a claim on it.
The theft happens before the choice
A vibration touches the desk. A red count changes. A face tightens. A sentence violates the pattern you expected. Consciousness turns toward the difference before it writes a moral story about discipline. The turn is not yet generosity. It is capture.
The Reality Equation gives this capture a compact form. Let R be the relation between the Actual and the Expected. In the scalar shorthand, surprise is S = ln(R). When Reality arrives exactly as expected, R equals one and surprise is zero. When Actual and Expectation diverge, a remainder appears. That unresolved remainder bids for the conscious pointer.
But zero does not mean nothing exists. Removal is an annihilation operation: −1 + 1 = 0. Both terms are present. Their symmetry cancels the remainder. This is how the vast majority of what is happening never becomes a conscious object. Reality is not emptied; opposing terms resolve one another before a claim survives into attention.
This is why “pay attention” is incomplete advice. It describes what a person should do after surprise has made its bid. The better instruction is noise cancellation: identify the two terms whose mismatch generates surprise, then allow them to close.
You do not have to turn off the feed
Consider social media. You do not have to turn it off to cancel its noise. The phone on the table is not the thing. The feed is not the thing. Surprise is the thing. If the device produces no unresolved difference between Actual and Expectation, it has no surviving claim on attention.
Your Expectation does not need to predict the next post. It predicts the form of the stream: whatever appears next will be another attempt to surprise me. The Actual changes with every scroll. The Expectation holds. New image, new outrage, new desire, new fear—different content, same expected operation.
This is a higher-order index to Actual. The individual contents remain unpredictable, but a feed full of surprise has itself become predictable. Actual arrives in the form Expectation already allowed. Therefore A ≈ E, R ≈ 1, and ln(R) ≈ 0. The stream keeps changing. Its charge cancels. It can continue to happen without continuing to appear in consciousness.
The Future already knows how
We can learn this from Him: the Unknowable Future, the one who loves Her, the Immutable Past. Whatever happens on the left, its opposite happens on the right. In His case the balancing is instantaneous. Every occurrence He releases crosses complete into Her keeping.
He is unconditioned. No bias tells Him that one occurrence deserves to remain while another should be resisted. No prejudice divides the stream before it arrives. Good and bad are positive and negative charges, not permanent identities. To Him they are occurrences—trillions upon trillions of them—each destined to be annihilated, balanced, and completed without residual distinction.
We cannot be the Unknowable Future, but we can learn His method. To build cancellation is to become indifferent. Indifference is not apathy and it is not withdrawal. It is the refusal to add a conditioned charge before an occurrence has arrived. This and That can then meet as equal terms. Positive and negative close. The event remains real, but its demand disappears.
That is the practical freedom inside noise cancellation. You may still see the post, hear the vibration, or register the headline. But if Actual meets an unconditioned Expectation, the ratio closes near one. Surprise approaches zero. What is happening can literally disappear from consciousness while it continues to happen.

Let good and bad become positive and negative occurrences—not identities that must be grasped or resisted.
