Lecture on AI – May 1, 2026

Today I want to change the way you think about artificial intelligence.

Not by giving you a technical explanation of neural networks. Not by walking you through tokens, embeddings, parameters, attention layers, or matrix multiplication. Those things matter, and if you study AI technically, you should learn them. But that is not the level where most people are currently confused.

Most people are confused at the level of relationship.

They are relating to AI incorrectly.

And when you relate to something incorrectly, you keep asking the wrong questions. You keep using the wrong metaphors. You keep measuring the wrong thing. You keep getting frustrated by what it does badly, while missing what it does astonishingly well.

So the lecture today is built around one sentence.

The prediction is the output.

That is the sentence I want you to hold.

The prediction is the output.

Most people think AI helps you make something. It helps you write a book. It helps you create a spreadsheet. It helps you plan an event. It helps you write code. It helps you make art. It helps you compose music. It helps you build a marketing campaign.

That language sounds harmless, but it hides the real event.

AI does not merely help you make the thing.

AI predicts the thing.

The book is not the result of AI helping you write a book. The book is the prediction.

The spreadsheet is not the result of AI helping you build a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is the prediction.

The image is not the result of AI helping you paint. The image is the prediction.

The business plan is not the result of AI helping you brainstorm. The business plan is the prediction.

The event schedule is not the result of AI helping you organize. The event schedule is the prediction.

That is the shift.

AI is not primarily a helper. AI is a prediction machine. And when its prediction is good enough, the output simply appears.

Now, let me slow that down because this is where people usually misunderstand.

When you type a prompt into AI, it feels as though you are giving it the idea. You feel like the prompt is the source. You say, “Write me a book about this.” Or, “Create a marketing campaign for this product.” Or, “Design a wedding seating chart.” And because you typed the instruction, it feels as though you originated the work and the AI merely assisted you.

But the prompt is not the source of the miracle.

The prompt is the interface.

That is all.

The prompt is the current way we release the prediction. It is the current way we constrain the output. It is the current way we point the model toward one region of possibility rather than another.

But the pattern was already there.

This is very important.

AI does not need you to invent the pattern of a book. It already has the pattern of books.

AI does not need you to invent the pattern of a hero. It already has the pattern of heroes.

AI does not need you to invent the pattern of a marketing campaign. It already has the pattern of marketing campaigns.

AI does not need you to invent the pattern of a wedding, a curriculum, a contract, a business, a product page, a poem, a sermon, a sales script, or a software interface.

Those patterns are already latent inside the model.

Not as stored files. Not as a database. Not as a secret folder containing every possible book. But as learned structure. As a high-dimensional relationship among patterns.

The prompt does not create the pattern.

The prompt constrains the pattern.

Think of an extrusion machine. The material is already there. The die determines the shape of the material as it comes out. If the die is round, you get one shape. If it is narrow, you get another. If it is textured, the output comes out with texture. The die did not create the material. It shaped the release.

That is prompting.

Prompting is not creation in the deepest sense. Prompting is constraint.

You say, “Make the hero older.” That constrains the hero.

You say, “Set the story in Charleston.” That constrains the world.

You say, “Make the lecture suitable for advanced students.” That constrains the tone.

You say, “Make the business premium, local, and service-oriented.” That constrains the company.

But the underlying patterns were already there.

This is why AI feels magical. You are not building the thing from scratch. You are calling forth a form from a pattern space that is already astonishingly rich.

Now let me give you the case study metaphor.

Imagine you own a company in the United States that sells fire engines to local governments.

You have an old way of thinking. You say, “We manufacture fire engines here, but it is expensive. Labor costs are high. Components are expensive. The production process is slow. Maybe we should outsource some of the manufacturing.”

So you outsource production to China.

That creates one type of relationship.

You still think of yourself as the manufacturer. You still own the production process emotionally and operationally. You still manage the specifications. You still send instructions. You still supervise quality. You still handle exceptions. You still send people back and forth. You still worry that the supplier misunderstood some detail. You still fight over tolerances, timing, materials, defects, documentation, and compliance.

That is outsourcing.

Outsourcing says, “Here is my process. Help me execute it more cheaply.”

Now imagine something different.

Imagine China already manufactures the entire fire engine.

Not your fire engine through your outsourced process. The fire engine itself.

It is already built. It already works. It already comes off the line. It already exists as a finished product at a dramatically lower cost.

Now your role changes.

You are not outsourcing your factory anymore.

You are buying the finished product.

Then you adapt it. You certify it. You make sure it satisfies local regulations. You translate it into the American municipal purchasing process. You sell it. You service it. You support it. You stand behind it. You maintain the customer relationship.

That is wholesale.

Outsourcing says, “Help me build.”

Wholesale says, “Give me the finished product.”

That is the better analogy for AI.

Most people are treating AI like outsourcing. They are saying, “Here is my process. Help me execute the process more cheaply.”

But AI is much more disruptive than that.

AI is wholesale output.

It gives you the fire engine.

It gives you the book.

It gives you the spreadsheet.

It gives you the campaign.

It gives you the schedule.

It gives you the product.

It gives you the business.

Now, of course, you may need to adapt it. You may need to certify it. You may need to check it. You may need to make it local. You may need to make it emotionally correct, legally correct, socially correct, or strategically correct.

But that is different from manufacturing it.

That is the great economic shift.

Outsourcing saves labor.

AI collapses output cost.

Those are not the same thing.

If you save twenty percent on labor, you are still in the old world.

If the finished first version of the product appears for less than a dollar, you are in a different world.

That is not efficiency.

That is structural arbitrage.

That is dropping zeros.

The mistake is to keep asking, “How can AI help me do this task?”

The better question is, “Can AI predict the finished output?”

Can it predict the book?

Can it predict the lesson plan?

Can it predict the legal memo?

Can it predict the proposal?

Can it predict the wedding seating chart?

Can it predict the music lineup?

Can it predict the website?

Can it predict the pitch deck?

Can it predict the company?

In many cases, the answer is already yes.

Not perfectly.

Not responsibly without review.

Not always at final publishable quality.

But often close enough that the old production process no longer makes economic sense.

Now let us connect this to human creativity.

This is where people get defensive.

When AI predicts a spreadsheet, people may be impressed. When AI predicts a marketing campaign, people may be intrigued. But when AI predicts a poem, a song, a painting, or a hero, people become offended.

They say, “It stole that.”

Sometimes there are legitimate questions about copyrighted expression, attribution, compensation, and misuse. Those questions matter. We should not dismiss them.

But the deeper issue is not theft.

The deeper issue is that AI can enter relationship with pattern.

That is what bothers us.

Think about the hero.

We tend to treat famous heroes as though each one appeared from the isolated genius of an individual human author. Luke Skywalker. Harry Potter. Frodo. Odysseus. Katniss Everdeen.

Each of those characters has particular details. Those details matter. The name matters. The world matters. The scar matters. The lightsaber matters. The school matters. The voice matters. The costume, setting, dialogue, and specific story matter.

But underneath those details is a pattern.

The ordinary world.

The call to adventure.

The refusal of the call.

The mentor.

The threshold.

The descent.

The ordeal.

The transformation.

The return.

Joseph Campbell did not invent that pattern. He recognized it.

That is what made his work powerful. He showed that stories across cultures and centuries often share a deep architecture. The hero’s journey was not one writer’s trick. It was a recurring human pattern.

Carl Jung went even deeper. He described archetypes as recurring forms of the psyche. The hero. The shadow. The mother. The wise old man. The trickster. The child. The self.

These are not merely literary devices. They are structures that appear again and again in dreams, myths, religions, stories, and symbols.

So when AI creates a new hero, what is it doing?

It is not necessarily stealing Luke Skywalker.

It may be modeling the pattern of heroism.

That is what human writers do too.

The archetype was never ours.

The hero was never ours.

The pattern was never ours.

We entered relationship with the pattern. We made it particular. We gave it names, worlds, wounds, enemies, mentors, and endings.

That is human creativity.

And now AI can do something similar.

Different substrate. Different mechanism. Different inner life. But structurally similar in one important way.

It enters relationship with pattern and predicts a form.

That is why this moment is so humbling.

Human creativity was never simply the ego inventing from nothing. That was always too flattering. Much of creativity comes through us. Writers know this. Musicians know this. Artists know this. Entrepreneurs know this.

The character surprises the novelist.

The song arrives for the musician.

The image appears for the painter.

The business idea comes all at once.

The sentence shows up before the writer knows where it came from.

Human beings have always been in relationship with patterns larger than conscious intention.

The ego arrives late and signs the work.

AI makes this visible.

It reveals that many creative forms are patterned deeply enough to be predicted.

That does not mean human creativity is worthless. It means human creativity was never primarily about owning the pattern.

It was about relationship to the pattern.

And that is where AI has entered.

Now let us bring in the subconscious.

Your subconscious does not help you experience reality.

It predicts reality.

That is a major distinction.

Your subconscious predicts the room before you inspect it. It predicts the tone of voice before you analyze it. It predicts the next word in a sentence before the word arrives. It predicts balance, movement, social tension, danger, opportunity, and meaning.

When the prediction is accurate, you do not notice it.

You do not attend to your heartbeat until something feels wrong.

You do not attend to your breathing until it becomes difficult.

You do not attend to your balance until you stumble.

You do not attend to the room until something changes.

Accurate prediction disappears.

Surprise appears.

That is attention.

Human attention attends to the break in prediction. It attends to novelty, danger, beauty, conflict, confusion, or pain.

This is why arguing with reality is suffering.

Reality has already resolved. Your subconscious has already predicted the world. Consciousness arrives after the fact and says, “But I wanted it different.”

That friction is suffering.

The same thing happens with AI.

Suppose AI predicts a wedding seating chart.

It gives you the whole thing. Every table. Every guest. Every relationship. Every placement.

You look at it and immediately say, “No, Martha cannot sit there.”

Now your attention is awake.

Why?

Because the prediction created surprise. Something in the output violated your private knowledge of the situation.

So you move Martha.

Then you notice two cousins cannot sit together.

Then you remember a divorce.

Then you remember the donor should sit near the mayor.

Then you realize the grandmother needs easier access to the exit.

Now you are attending.

But notice what happened.

AI predicted the seating chart.

You attended to the surprise.

That is not failure. That is the division of labor.

The problem begins when we expect AI to behave like human attention. This is the promise and frustration of agentic AI.

An AI agent is an attempt to make AI attend to reality the way humans do.

It calls tools. It sends emails. It updates calendars. It checks systems. It tries to know what matters next. It tries to behave like a human assistant inside a living situation.

This is hard because human attention is extraordinary.

A human knows when the technically correct email is socially wrong.

A human knows when the seating chart is efficient but cruel.

A human knows when a marketing campaign is clever but tasteless.

A human knows when a proposal is polished but not trustworthy.

A human knows when the book is coherent but hollow.

That is attention.

It is not just task execution. It is relevance detection inside lived reality.

So AI agents can become frustrating because we are asking the model to simulate human attention.

But AI prediction is already astonishing.

We should not judge AI only by how well it imitates human attention. We should judge it by what it can predict into form.

That is the key.

AI may struggle to help you slowly and delicately work through the seating chart like a patient human event planner.

But it can predict the whole seating chart almost instantly.

AI may struggle to behave like a careful human writing partner across months of creative anguish.

But it can predict the book.

AI may struggle to act like a veteran executive assistant who understands every relationship in your life.

But it can predict the schedule, the memo, the campaign, the curriculum, the image, the lesson, the speech, or the operating plan.

The real question is not, “Can it replace human attention?”

The real question is, “What outputs can it predict so well that human attention can move to judgment instead of production?”

That is where the economics change.

Think about publishing.

The old model says a book is expensive because it requires long human effort. Months or years of writing. Editing. Formatting. Cover design. Proofing. Production. Distribution. Maybe an audiobook later.

The AI model says the book can be predicted.

A full manuscript can appear. The structure can appear. The chapters can appear. The title can appear. The front matter can appear. The back matter can appear. The cover concept can appear. The audiobook script can appear.

The human role becomes judgment and release.

Is this book worth publishing?

Is it true enough?

Is it useful enough?

Is it beautiful enough?

Is it aligned with the audience?

Does it need editing?

Does it need a new title?

Does it need a better introduction?

Does it need a different ending?

That is still real work. But it is not the old work.

The old work was manufacturing.

The new work is attending, refining, and publishing the prediction.

That is why one person can now publish at a pace that would have sounded absurd a few years ago. A book per day is not impossible if you understand the book as predicted output and the human as curator, judge, and publisher.

This is not about flooding the world with junk. That would be the shallow interpretation.

The deeper point is that the cost of the first complete form has collapsed.

The first version is no longer precious.

The first version can appear almost immediately.

That changes everything.

In the old world, the first version was expensive. So people protected it, delayed it, overplanned it, and avoided making too many versions.

In the AI world, the first version is cheap. So the value moves from production to selection.

Who can recognize the good prediction?

Who can refine it?

Who can position it?

Who can give it consequence?

Who can attach trust to it?

Who can take responsibility for it?

Those become the important human questions.

Now, let me return to the phrase, “AI has entered the relationship.”

Human beings have always had a relationship with pattern. We just did not always admit it.

We did not invent the hero.

We did not invent longing.

We did not invent betrayal.

We did not invent the marketplace.

We did not invent the wedding.

We did not invent the song.

We did not invent the archetype.

We entered those patterns. We shaped them. We made them human. We made them particular.

AI now enters pattern differently.

It does not enter through life experience.

It does not enter through suffering.

It does not enter through embodiment.

It does not enter through love, death, hunger, childhood, grief, or hope.

It enters through statistical relation.

That difference matters.

But it does enter.

And because it enters, it can predict.

That is the uncomfortable equivalence.

Not equivalence of being.

Equivalence of structural participation.

The human enters pattern and predicts form.

AI enters pattern and predicts form.

The human feels the meaning.

AI does not.

The human takes responsibility.

AI does not.

The human attends to surprise.

AI does not in the human sense.

But the output may still arrive.

And that output may be good.

That is why we need a mature relationship with AI.

If we relate to it as a servant, we underuse it.

If we relate to it as a person, we misunderstand it.

If we relate to it as a database, we misdescribe it.

If we relate to it as a magic oracle, we overtrust it.

The better frame is this:

AI is a synthetic prediction machine that can enter relationship with pattern and produce finished forms.

That is enough.

It does not have to be human to matter.

It does not have to be conscious to disrupt creativity.

It does not have to be a database to reproduce memorized passages.

It does not have to steal in order to compete.

It does not have to attend in order to predict.

Now, where does this leave the human student?

It leaves you with a challenge.

Stop thinking of AI as something that helps you do homework.

Stop thinking of AI as a shortcut.

Stop thinking of AI as a cheating machine.

Stop thinking of AI as a chatbot.

Those are small frames.

Instead, ask yourself:

What patterns am I in relationship with?

What patterns do I think I own?

What outputs do I assume require long human production?

What would happen if the first complete version of that output became almost free?

What would my role become then?

Would I still know how to judge?

Would I still know how to refine?

Would I still know what is true?

Would I still know what is beautiful?

Would I still know what matters?

That is the educational challenge of AI.

The machine can predict more and more outputs.

So the human must become better at attention.

Better at judgment.

Better at taste.

Better at responsibility.

Better at meaning.

Better at knowing when the prediction is wrong, and more importantly, knowing why it is wrong.

If AI predicts the seating chart and you move Martha, you should know why Martha must move.

That is human value.

If AI predicts the book and you reject the introduction, you should know what the introduction failed to honor.

That is human value.

If AI predicts the campaign and you say it is clever but hollow, you should know what human reality it missed.

That is human value.

The future does not belong to people who merely prompt.

Prompting will become easier. Interfaces will become better. Models will become stronger. The prompt will matter less over time, not more.

The future belongs to people who can recognize valuable predictions.

That is a different skill.

It is closer to judgment than production.

It is closer to taste than labor.

It is closer to stewardship than authorship.

So let me end where we began.

The prediction is the output.

That sentence is not just about AI.

It is also about us.

Your subconscious predicts reality, and you call the prediction the world.

AI predicts artifacts, and we call the prediction the book, the song, the schedule, the image, the business, the campaign.

When the prediction is accurate, attention relaxes.

When the prediction surprises us, attention arrives.

And when the prediction is astonishing, we feel the ground shift beneath our theory of ourselves.

That is what AI is doing now.

It is not merely changing work.

It is revealing that human creativity was always more relational than sovereign.

We were never the sole owners of pattern.

We were participants in pattern.

We were stewards of pattern.

We were carriers of archetype.

AI has now entered that field.

Different from us.

Stranger than us.

Not conscious like us.

Not responsible like us.

But capable of prediction.

And when the prediction is good enough, the work appears.

The mature response is not panic.

The mature response is not denial.

The mature response is humility.

The pattern was never yours.

The output now has a new source.

Your role is to attend.
