The Moment of Negotiation
When the urge comes — to smoke, to drink, to eat, to do the very thing you swore off — it never begins as action. It begins as negotiation. A thought pattern has arrived. It presents its case. It makes suggestions, bargains, appeals to reason. You are not the one creating it; you are in relationship with it.
This is the middle zone — the place where habit lives. You are not in the grip of a dominant idea, and you are not freely diffused among many. You are hovering, half-open, half-guarded, giving a single thought pattern the attention it needs to grow.
The Two Lanes
On one end of the spectrum is total domination, when a great idea has you. You do nothing to make this happen. It chooses you. When it arrives, the middle zone dissolves. The craving thought can’t even get in; it’s as though the habit never existed. You are had — beautifully, completely, without negotiation.
But when that kind of possession isn’t happening — and most of the time it isn’t — your only option is the other extreme: total diffusion.
Total Diffusion: The Practice
Total diffusion is not thinking better thoughts or replacing bad ones. It’s simpler, more primitive. It’s about moving attention faster than any single thought pattern can catch it.
The method is this: trap and move.
- Trap. Attend to something — anything. The sky, the sound of traffic, a song, a tree. You don’t have to do anything else. A new thought pattern will use that object to speak to you. It always will.
- Move. The moment you notice that thought starting to build, shift your attention to something else — a new object, a new sound, a new sensation.
- Repeat. Every time you feel a thought beginning to take shape, move again. Trap, move, trap, move.
You’re not fighting thoughts; you’re refusing to stay still long enough for any one of them to recruit you.
Why It Works
Every thought pattern needs time and attention to actualize. When you’re in the middle zone, you’re giving it both. In total diffusion, you starve it. You keep moving. A thought uses the moon — move. Another uses a passing car — move. Another uses a lyric — move. None of them get enough time to build momentum.
The craving doesn’t vanish because you’ve conquered it. It vanishes because it never had the chance to exist for long.
Grace and Practice
The beauty of this is that you’re never without options. If a dominant idea shows up and has you, you’re safe. And if it doesn’t, you’re still safe — because you can move.
One lane happens to you.
The other you can do.
