Affordable Charleston

  1. Concept Development

The design concept for this project centers around creating affordable multi-unit housing that seamlessly integrates with the historic charm of downtown Charleston, SC. Drawing inspiration from the Italianate architecture that thrived in the area during the late 19th century, the design seeks to preserve the unique character of the neighborhood while addressing the growing need for accessible, affordable living spaces.

Key Design Principles:

  1. Architectural Harmony: The design will pay homage to the Italianate architectural style prevalent in the area, with attention to details such as ornate cornices, decorative brackets, tall and narrow windows, and elaborate door surrounds. These features will be carefully incorporated into the design to achieve a harmonious blend with the existing historic streetscape.
  2. Material Selection: The choice of materials will be guided by the local context and historic precedents, with an emphasis on locally sourced brick and stucco for the building’s exterior. These materials will be used in combination with traditional colors and finishes to create a visual connection with the surrounding historic fabric.
  3. Space Efficiency: Given the focus on affordable housing, the design will prioritize space efficiency and clever use of compact layouts. By employing innovative floor plans, flexible living spaces, and shared amenities, the design aims to maximize the functionality and livability of each unit while maintaining affordability.
  4. Sustainable Design: The project will incorporate sustainable design strategies to reduce the environmental impact of the building, as well as promote the well-being of its residents. This may include energy-efficient building systems, green roofs, and the use of environmentally friendly materials.
  5. Community Integration: The design will foster a sense of community within the multi-unit housing complex and encourage interaction with the broader Charleston neighborhood. This will be achieved through the incorporation of shared outdoor spaces, communal areas, and integration with the surrounding pedestrian-friendly streets and public spaces.

Through the careful consideration of these guiding principles, the project aims to create a modern, affordable multi-unit housing development that both respects and enhances the historic character of downtown Charleston, SC. The result will be a living space that embodies the charm and beauty of the past while addressing the contemporary needs of the community.
