Expectation Is Complex

Reality is complex because Expectation is complex.

The Reality Equation is:

R(t) = A(t) / E(t)

Reality is the quotient of the Actual-Expectation relation.

The numerator is Actual:

A(t)

The denominator is Expectation:

E(t)

For this model, Actual is real. It is given by the Immutable Past. It has no imaginary component.

Expectation is different.

Expectation is complex.

The Structure Of Expectation

Expectation has two components:

E(t) = P(t) + iI(t)

P(t) is the real predictive component of Expectation.

I(t) is the imaginary idea-orientation component of Expectation.

This is not a decorative mathematical move. It is the step that allows Reality to carry both prediction and orientation.

Expectation is not merely “what I think will happen.”

Expectation includes a directional structure. It includes orientation toward meaning, possibility, idea, memory, category, and imagined relation.

Why Reality Becomes Complex

Since:

R(t) = A(t) / E(t)

and:

E(t) = P(t) + iI(t)

then:

R(t) = A(t) / (P(t) + iI(t))

Because the denominator is complex, Reality is complex.

Formally:

R(t) = A(t)(P(t) - iI(t)) / (P(t)^2 + I(t)^2)

So:

Re(R(t)) = A(t)P(t) / (P(t)^2 + I(t)^2)
Im(R(t)) = -A(t)I(t) / (P(t)^2 + I(t)^2)

Reality is not complex because Actual is imaginary. Actual is real.

Reality is complex because Expectation is complex.

Why This Matters For Attention

If Expectation were only scalar, surprise would be too simple.

But human attention is not only about more or less.

Attention has intensity, but it also has direction. It is pulled toward something. It has a felt orientation. Pain, opportunity, beauty, insult, hunger, novelty, and threat are not merely different quantities. They arrive with direction.

The complex structure gives the model a way to separate:

attention-demand
attention-location

Attention-demand is magnitude.

Attention-location is directional.

Not Yet Conscious Attention

Even now, we do not yet have attention.

We have Reality:

R(t)

And we know Reality is complex because Expectation is complex.

But attention is not Reality itself.

Attention will require surprise.
