Why an Idea Appears Biased

The easiest way to understand why an idea appears biased is not to begin with psychology.

Do not begin with personality.

Do not begin with philosophy.

Just draw the circle.

Draw a circle on the board. If you want to make it mathematically clean, call it the unit circle. If you want to make it cosmological, call it the event horizon. Either way, the structure is the same.

There is a center point.

There is a circumference.

The center point is the Immutable Past.

The circumference contains the ideas.

Now notice something very simple. The circumference is made of points. Not a few points. Not many points. Infinitely many points. More precisely, continuum-infinitely many points.

Every point on the circumference can be identified by an angle.

Zero degrees.

One degree.

Thirty-three degrees.

Thirty-three point zero one six seven eight four nine degrees.

And between any two angles, no matter how close they are, there is always another angle.

This is enough to show why there can be an infinite number of ideas. We do not need a mythology to get there. We do not need a doctrine. We do not need a list.

We only need the circle.

Every endpoint on the circumference is an idea.

Now begin at the center.

The center is a point. It has no width. No length. No height. No dimension. It is a node.

If we call the center “her,” then what does she know?

She knows only herself.

But that sentence is already misleading, because “knowing herself” sounds like there is a subject looking at an object. That is not what is happening. She is not comparing herself to something else. She is not noticing the circumference. She is not watching the endpoints try to reach her.

She is the center.

She is complete.

She is all things as one.

She has no angle.

That is the important mathematical statement.

The center has no angle.

You cannot say the center is thirty-three degrees. You cannot say the center is blue, red, yellow, justice, symmetry, mercy, hierarchy, or beauty. All of those require distinction. All of those require location on the circumference. All of those require angle.

The center has no angle.

The center is not one idea among ideas.

The center is complete actuality without distinction.

Now move out to the circumference.

Pick any point.

It does not matter which one.

Let us pick thirty-three degrees.

On the unit circle, that point can be written as:

(cos 33°, sin 33°)

That is just the endpoint at thirty-three degrees.

Now let us label that endpoint Blue.

This does not mean that Blue is floating somewhere as a little personality. It means that, in this diagram, Blue is the name we are giving to the endpoint at thirty-three degrees.

Blue equals that angle.

Blue equals that point.

Blue equals that distinction.

Now ask the same question we asked about the center.

What does Blue know?

Blue knows only itself.

Again, this is not a psychological claim. It is a geometric one. Blue is a point. It has no width, length, or height. It has no internal extension. It has no room inside itself for comparison. It is not a little chamber containing thoughts about red, yellow, green, or purple.

It is a node.

It is this one point.

From our frame of reference, we can say, “That point is Blue.”

But from the point’s own frame, it would not even call itself Blue.

To call it Blue already requires an observer who can see the circle, distinguish one angle from another, and label this angle differently from that angle.

The point does not do that.

The point simply is what it is.

This is where the language of bias has to be handled carefully.

From our perspective, Blue appears biased toward Blue.

From the perspective of the line, Blue seems prejudiced toward itself. It does not care about red. It does not care about yellow. It does not care about balance. It does not care about shades of blue. It does not care about context.

But that is how it appears to us because we can see more than one point.

We can see the circle.

Blue cannot.

Blue is not choosing itself over red.

Blue does not know red.

Blue is not refusing yellow.

Blue does not know yellow.

Blue is not insisting on pure blue instead of navy, cobalt, sky blue, or teal.

Blue does not know shades.

Shades are already actualized compromises. They belong to the world of expression, mixture, condition, and manifestation. The endpoint itself is not a shade. The endpoint is pure distinction.

It is thirty-three degrees.

That is all.

So when we say an idea is biased, we are really describing a difference in frame of reference.

From the frame of the line, the endpoint is biased.

From the frame of the endpoint, there is no bias.

There is only itself.

A helpful analogy is the photon.

From our perspective, light moves extremely fast. We say the speed of light is the maximum speed in the universe. We describe a photon as traveling across enormous distances, perhaps from a faraway galaxy to Earth.

But if we imagine interviewing the photon, the question begins to collapse.

“What is it like traveling so fast?”

From the photon’s frame, the question does not make sense. The photon does not experience the journey the way we describe the journey. Our description depends on our frame of reference.

The same is true with the idea.

We say, “Blue is very biased toward Blue.”

But if we could interview Blue, Blue would not understand the question.

“What is it like being so Blue?”

Blue would not know what we meant.

It would not know “Blue” as a label.

It would not know “so Blue” as an intensity.

It would not know “not Blue” as an alternative.

It would not know comparison.

It would not know preference.

It would not know bias.

It would only be the endpoint at thirty-three degrees.

This is why the center and the endpoint are similar, but not identical.

Both are points.

Both are nodes.

Both have no dimensions.

Both know only themselves.

But the center has no angle.

The endpoint has an angle.

That is the whole difference.

The center is complete without distinction.

The endpoint is distinction without completeness.

The center is all things as one.

The endpoint is one thing as itself.

That is why we can label the endpoint Blue but cannot label the center Blue.

Blue requires angle.

The center has none.

If all possible endpoints were activated at once, if every angle on the circumference were fully present without distinction, then from our diagram we could begin to see why the center represents completeness. Not this idea or that idea. Not one endpoint. Not one angle. Not one condition.

All things as one.

But the endpoint is not all things as one.

The endpoint is one thing.

And because it is one thing, it has no internal access to the rest of the circle.

This is the mathematical root of what we casually call prejudice.

Prejudice, in the ordinary human sense, means a preference formed against something else.

But the idea does not begin with “against.”

The idea begins with “this.”

Thirty-three degrees is not against forty degrees.

Thirty-three degrees is not against two hundred degrees.

Thirty-three degrees is simply thirty-three degrees.

The conflict appears only when a line is drawn.

Draw a line from the endpoint to the center.

Now there is a relationship.

The endpoint is the idea.

The center is the Immutable Past.

The line is the actualizer.

The line is where the idea attempts to leave its mark on the center.

And the line is also the first place where the rest of the circle becomes relevant.

Why?

Because the line is not a point.

The line has extension.

The line has orientation.

The line connects two points.

The line can be seen from the outside.

The line can be compared with other possible lines from other possible endpoints.

This is why the human being, as actualizer, can experience conflict among ideas. The endpoint cannot. The center does not. But the line can.

The line can say, “I am being pulled by Blue.”

The line can say, “Red is also possible.”

The line can say, “If I actualize Blue completely, I exclude Yellow.”

The line can say, “If I mix Blue and Red, I no longer actualize pure Blue.”

The line can say these things because the line participates in geometry differently from the point.

The line can see relationship.

The point cannot.

This is why humans can speak of bias, while ideas cannot.

The idea is not biased from its own frame.

The idea is biased from ours.

We are the ones who can see that Blue is only one angle among infinitely many angles. We are the ones who can see that Blue is limited. We are the ones who can see that Blue does not contain Red, Yellow, Green, Mercy, Justice, Symmetry, or Silence.

But Blue does not know it is limited.

A limit can only be seen from beyond the limit.

Blue is not beyond Blue.

Blue is Blue.

That is the first-principles explanation.

An idea appears biased because it is an endpoint with an angle.

It has distinction.

It has location.

It has identity.

But it has no dimension, no amplitude, no comparison, and no awareness of the rest of the circle.

The human actualizer, being a line, sees the endpoint in relation to the center and in relation to other possible endpoints.

So the human says, “This idea is prejudiced toward itself.”

That statement is useful.

But it is not ultimately a statement about the idea’s psychology.

It is a statement about our geometry.

The endpoint is not trying to be unfair.

The endpoint is not trying to dominate.

The endpoint is not trying to defeat the other endpoints.

It simply cannot be anything other than the angle it is.

Blue is not biased because it hates Red.

Blue appears biased because Blue has no Red in it.

Blue has no Yellow in it.

Blue has no outside in it.

Blue has only Blue.

Or more precisely:

Blue has only thirty-three degrees.

And that is why every idea, when seen from the actualizer’s frame, appears prejudiced toward itself.
