The mistake people are making about AI
Most people still think the breakthrough moment in AI will arrive when some future model becomes dramatically smarter than the current ones. They are waiting for a visible miracle. They are waiting for a release so obviously superior that everyone agrees the world has changed.
But that is not how the deepest changes begin.
The real threshold is much lower than that. The threshold is not perfection. The threshold is not superintelligence. The threshold is not even public astonishment.
The threshold is predictive sufficiency.
A system begins to matter when it becomes good enough at prediction to absorb attended work.
That is the moment the world starts changing, whether the public notices or not.
The subconscious was never perfect either
My claim is not that a large language model is equivalent to the full human subconscious. The human subconscious is larger, stranger, older, and more embodied than that. It includes instinct, physiology, sensor fusion, hormonal regulation, spatial orientation, and countless other processes that no language model possesses.
My claim is narrower.
A GPT-style large language model is analogous to the predictive function of the subconscious.
That predictive function is not perfect. Your subconscious does not flawlessly predict every sound, every movement, every social cue, or every bodily need. It makes errors constantly. But it predicts well enough to keep you alive, well enough to help you navigate the world, and well enough to offload an enormous amount of attended work from consciousness.
That is the point.
The subconscious does not need to be infallible to be indispensable. It only needs to be good enough.
The same principle applies to AI.
Why the public keeps missing the inflection point
People tend to assume that a system must be nearly flawless before it becomes socially or economically meaningful. But biology does not work that way, and neither does technological adoption.
A function becomes transformative long before it becomes perfect.
What matters is whether it can reliably absorb work that used to require attention.
Once that line is crossed, a cascade begins. The system starts carrying more weight. Humans begin checking it less. The workflow changes. The price drops. The identity attached to the work begins to destabilize. Institutions are slow to admit it, but the underlying mechanism is already in motion.
This is why so many people misread what has happened with AI. They are still asking whether it is perfect. That is the wrong question.
The right question is whether it is predictively sufficient.
If it is, then the absorption has already begun.
Why 2023 mattered more than many people realize
For many observers, the important story is that recent models feel dramatically better than earlier ones. That is true, and the improvements are real. But the more interesting threshold may have arrived earlier than the public narrative suggests.
Somewhere between GPT-3 and GPT-4o, the pattern became truly predictive in a way that mattered.
Not perfect. Not final. Not complete. But good enough to begin functioning as a synthetic prediction machine that could shoulder real attended work.
That was the deeper break.
Once the model could predict with sufficient usefulness, it no longer had to wait for some future version to become important. It was already important. It was already beginning to act like a synthetic layer beneath conscious human effort. It was already beginning to take on work that had previously required attention, sequence, checking, formatting, drafting, rewriting, summarizing, classifying, responding, and pattern recognition.
The later models may be more impressive. They may be broader, faster, cleaner, and more reliable.
But the true transition began when the machine became predictively sufficient.
That is when the architecture changed.
The world waits for spectacle. Reality moves underneath it.
The public usually notices change only when it becomes theatrical.
A lawyer notices when AI drafts a useful memo.
A designer notices when AI generates a nearly finished concept.
A founder notices when AI produces an app.
A manager notices when AI does in an hour what used to take a team three days.
These are visible moments. They are social moments. They are economic moments.
But beneath them is something quieter and more fundamental.
The important shift is that attention is being reallocated.
Work that once required conscious effort begins to migrate downward into a system that can handle it predictively. At first, the human still supervises heavily. Then the human checks selectively. Then the human mainly intervenes on exceptions, ambiguity, and surprise.
This is exactly how higher-order systems are built. Lower-order attended work gets absorbed so that scarce attention can move upward.
The visible shock comes later. The structural change comes first.
This is why “good enough” is such a dangerous phrase
People hear “good enough” and think mediocre.
But “good enough” is one of the most powerful thresholds in economics, biology, and technology.
A map does not need to be perfect to guide you.
A memory does not need to be perfect to help you navigate.
A subconscious prediction does not need to be perfect to free your attention for more important things.
And an AI system does not need to be perfect to change the price and structure of work.
In fact, once something is good enough to absorb attended work, improvement becomes almost secondary to the existence of the absorption itself.
The world tends to debate whether the outputs are amazing.
The more important question is whether the work still deserves full human attention.
That is the real dividing line.
The labor market sees the consequence before it understands the mechanism
Many people in technology are now describing the shock of seeing AI do work they once considered uniquely theirs. Their language is often the language of replacement. They say the AI does the job, or automates the task, or outperforms the junior employee, or reduces the need for the human expert.
That language describes the consequence.
But the mechanism is better described as absorption.
The attended work is being absorbed by a synthetic prediction machine.
This matters because replacement is socially inflammatory but mechanically shallow. It tells us what the worker feels. It does not tell us what the system is doing.
Absorption tells us more.
It explains why the change begins before the layoffs.
It explains why price falls before institutions fully adapt.
It explains why identity gets threatened even before formal job descriptions change.
It explains why people feel the ground moving beneath them while the official language still sounds calm.
The work is not merely being “automated.”
It is being relocated from conscious human attention into a lower-cost predictive substrate.
That is the deeper event.
Attention should be reserved for surprise
Human attention is precious because surprise is real.
Attention belongs where the pattern is weak, where ambiguity is high, where stakes are unusual, where novelty matters, where judgment must be exercised under uncertainty, where embodiment and trust and presence still count for something irreducible.
That is what consciousness is for.
If a prediction machine can reliably handle the repetitive, the pattern-dense, the structurally familiar, the formatting-heavy, the draftable, the routinized, the templated, and the statistically obvious, then those things no longer deserve the same level of attended human effort they once required.
That does not diminish the human.
It clarifies the human.
It means that we should stop confusing our worth with the lower-level work we happened to perform during one chapter of economic history.
The crisis is not merely a job crisis. It is an identity crisis. Many people have built a sense of self around forms of attended work that are now becoming absorbable.
Future generations may find that hard to understand. They may wonder why we identified so strongly with tasks that were always waiting to become subconscious.
But for us, living through the transition, the loss feels intimate because the work once required us.
The real break has already happened
We do not need to wait for some future release to take AI seriously.
That is the misunderstanding.
The revolution does not begin when the system becomes extraordinary. It begins when the system becomes predictively sufficient.
Once that threshold is crossed, attended work starts to migrate. Once it migrates, prices fall. Once prices fall, roles destabilize. Once roles destabilize, institutions scramble to rename what has already changed.
The public calls this sudden.
It is not sudden.
It is late recognition.
The deeper truth is simpler: the synthetic prediction machine became good enough, and now the world must reorganize around that fact.
What matters now
The practical question is not whether AI is perfect.
It is whether you understand what kinds of work in your life are mostly pattern, mostly prediction, mostly repetition, mostly structure, mostly familiar sequence.
Those are the places where absorption begins.
The people who benefit most from this era will not be the ones waiting for unanimous public agreement. They will be the ones who recognize that “good enough” was the real threshold all along.
The subconscious never waited for perfection.
Neither will the synthetic one.
