Why Mystical Events Feel Different

Mystical events feel different because, in those moments, the scope of who you are has shifted in ways you didn’t consciously choose.

Think of it like working at Marriott. At first, you’re an employee at a single hotel. One day you’re promoted to manage that hotel. Later you’re promoted again — now you oversee Marriott in the United States. Then you move up to run Marriott International. Finally, you might even lead a conglomerate that owns Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt, or serve as spokesperson for the entire hospitality industry.

At each step, you’re still “you.” Your name hasn’t changed. But the frame of reference defining who you are has expanded. Mystical events are like that: moments when the unconscious quietly redefines your frame. You don’t decide it. You can’t see the machinery. You just feel that reality has changed.

What You Actually Feel

Consciously, you never see the mechanics. You don’t see whether you’re being counted as one hotel, the brand, or the entire industry. You only feel the outcome — a number that arrives in you as surprise.

  • If the ratio is exactly one, the log is zero. That means no surprise, no experience.
  • If it’s greater than one, you feel an expansion — an “ah.”
  • If it’s less than one, you feel a constriction — an “ooh.”

That’s all the conscious side knows: ooh or ah. Mystical events feel so powerful because the unconscious has silently redefined the indices — who you are and in what frame.

The Hidden Mathematics

The structure behind this is the reality equation:

Reality Equation
  • Entity (X): who is being measured (an employee, the brand, the industry).
  • State (s): the conditioning or context (U.S. hospitality, global hospitality).
  • Actual (A): what actually happened.
  • Expectation (E): unconscious denominator, made of predictors (P) and coherences (C).
  • Reality (R): the quotient that arrives.
  • S: the felt log, reported as ooh or ah.

Entropy and Scope

As you move up the Marriott ladder, the number of possible microstates explodes. A single property has modest entropy: rooms full or empty, staff present or not. Marriott International has far more: hundreds of hotels, currencies, languages. The entire industry has more still.

Entropy is simply a count of possibilities. As entropy rises, predictors weaken, coherences cancel, and the denominator slackens. With the numerator fixed, the quotient shifts. You, the witness, feel it as surprise. Mystical events are those moments when entropy surges because the scope defining you has silently broadened.

Entropy grows as scope broadens: Hotel → Brand → Industry.

The 2×2 Map of Change

Every shift fits into four quadrants:

  • 00 — Same entity, same state: slow drift, gentle trend lines.
  • 01 — Same entity, new state: same “you,” new conditioning; chart reshapes instantly.
  • 10 — New entity, same state: aperture widens or narrows; “I” becomes “we.”
  • 11 — New entity, new state: the most radical jump; both aperture and conditioning reset.
Entity vs. State switches: the four possible moves.

Experience as Surprise

The mathematics says: no surprise, no experience. If everything matches expectation, the log of reality is zero. Experience vanishes.

Surprise — whether constrictive or expansive — is what makes reality felt. Mystical events are moments of surprise, not because the number is bigger, but because the unconscious has redefined the scope of “you.”

The Heart of It

Mystical events feel different because they are different. They are not about intensity or control. They are about scope — who you are and in what frame your reality is computed.

The Marriott analogy shows how a change of entity or state reshapes your entire chart. The mathematics shows why: reality is always a quotient, entropy always rises with breadth, and the conscious witness always receives the result as surprise.

That is the mathematics behind mystical events: not magic, but the echo of an unconscious reframe that makes awe possible.
