Zero, One, and the Eternal Now

Why 0 and 1 on a probability plot are not the same as Pure Possibility and Absolute Certainty — and how to keep logos and mythos cleanly separated.

Logos: What the Vertical Axis Really Means

In our plots, the vertical axis is probability density |ψ(x)|². By definition:

Normalization integral
  • Values are between 0 and 1 per unit length. It’s a density, not a bare probability. Integrate over a region to get the probability of finding the system there.
  • After “collapse,” a tall narrow spike is not certainty. It is a localized state whose area is 1. Height can be large; certainty remains a category orthodoxy does not claim.
  • Zero density at a point is not metaphysical impossibility. It says: given this wavefunction and this experiment, the probability of that outcome is zero. That’s a model statement, not a statement about “all that can be.”

Height = density, not certainty. Zero = excluded by this model, not “pure potential.”

Mythos: Three Domains

To keep our metaphysics precise, we partition reality into three domains:

  • Future100% Pure Possibility. Outside experiment. Not “0 probability”; it’s the domain of potential itself.
  • Eternal Now — the domain of appearance and measurement. Here probabilities live and collapse happens. Values range from 0 to 1, but neither endpoint equals the absolutes beyond.
  • Past (Actual)100% Certainty. Immutable, definitionless as a node; never directly measured, only mapped in our ratio as the numerator.
DomainStatusWhat 0/1 Mean Here
FuturePure Possibility (outside experiment)0 or 1 don’t apply; probability is a tool of the Eternal Now
Eternal NowAppearance/measurement0 = excluded by model; 1 = probability-one event in the model — neither is metaphysical absolute
Past (Actual)Immutable certainty (node)Not expressed as probabilities; it is the certainty our ratio references

How the Ratio Reads These Domains

Our reality ratio lives in the Eternal Now:

Reality ratio
  • Actual (numerator) belongs to the Past; we never probe it directly.
  • |E| (denominator) belongs to the Future-facing side of the Now; it encodes predictor and ideas.
  • Surprise is the felt trace in the Now: S = ln(R).

Notice the asymmetry: the numerator is outside our control and updates regardless of fixation; the denominator reflects attention (see Reduced Subsystem States). Thus the ratio evolves even when the gaze narrows — why “time heals” in our mythos frame.

Common Confusions, Clean Corrections

  • “The spike means certainty.” No — it means localization and probability one within the model. Certainty (Actual) lies outside the model.
  • “Zero density means pure possibility.” No — zero density is a modeling statement. Pure possibility is a property of the Future domain, not of a plotted point.
  • “Probability equals reality.” No — probability structures appearance; reality for us is the ratio A/|E| and its felt log.

Summary Soundbite

“In the Eternal Now, 0 and 1 are probability statements about appearance — not the absolutes of Pure Possibility or Immutable Certainty. Zero is not the Future; one is not the Past.”
