Two people stand in the same room and watch the same thing happen. Afterward one of them is elated and the other is devastated. Nothing about the event differed. The event is not in dispute. What differed is what each of them brought to it.
We usually file that under interpretation, and then treat interpretation as a soft, downstream, slightly unserious thing that happens to people after reality has finished being real. This book takes the opposite view, and takes it literally rather than poetically.
The first edition did one thing well: it disciplined the language. It separated Actual from Ideal from Real from Reality, made Expectation complex, formed the quotient honestly, and derived surprise instead of merely describing it. I would write those chapters again.
But it stopped at the doorway of the two questions the framework was built to answer — because I could not yet answer them. Now I can. Two papers this July worked them out, and this edition absorbs both. It is not a revision. It is a new book with an old spine.
What is new
Two turns the first edition never took
The machine has a shape.
Your expectation is produced by a prediction machine that hands you one number: a guess. But a guess is a resolution, and you cannot resolve alternatives you do not have.
Before it resolves, the machine holds a cloud of possibility. Everything we mean by consciousness, I now think, is legible in the shape of that cloud — not in the guess it emits, and not in the surprise that corrects it.
The arrival has a fate.
Something arrives. Then what? Some of it gets resolved into pieces a system can name, hold, and re-use. The rest does not.
That split — resolved against unresolved — is what we have always been pointing at with the word intelligence. And the unresolved part turns out to be where surprise, information, and attention actually live.
The result, without the mathematics
There are two things you can measure about a cloud, and they are independent: how wide it is, and how organized that width is. Apparent consciousness is the two multiplied together — which means there are two opposite ways to be unconscious, and the mathematics of sound names all three states exactly.
And the curve does not rise forever. Coherence fails once width outruns the machine’s capacity to organize it — which gives the sharpest claim in the book, and it is a theorem, not a picture: consciousness is maximized when spread is pushed right up to the edge of the machine’s ability to keep it coherent. Below the edge, collapse. Above it, noise. At the edge, music.
Consciousness reads the cloud a system holds before it guesses.
Intelligence reads how finely it resolves what arrives.
Those are two measurements of two different objects at two different moments, and they come apart in both directions. A signal-processing chip can resolve a sound wave almost perfectly while holding nothing at all. A person in vivid reverie holds worlds and resolves nothing of the brief on the table.
For all of human history those two quantities travelled together, because the same evolved machinery produced both. They do not travel together anymore. Getting that distinction right is no longer a philosophical nicety — it is the practical problem of the decade.

Listen first.
The narration carries the entire arc and almost none of the notation. Most people should start here, then open the book already knowing where it is going.
Read Parts One and Two.
Twelve short chapters. They build the vocabulary you cannot un-learn: what Actual is, why the denominator is complex, and why surprise has a direction.
Work the problems.
Part Five, Chapter 33. Eight cases, each worked in the notation, each naming the distinction a sloppier reading would lose. Fluency, not admiration.
- It does not solve the hard problem of consciousness. The bridge from structure to felt experience is stated as a postulate, and marked undischarged every time it is used.
- It does not claim any particular entity has felt experience. Every consciousness quantity in the book is an outside estimate of a property of a model.
- It does not claim intelligence entails experience, or that experience entails intelligence. The independence is made formal, in both directions.
- It does not claim its own measures are unique. Whether they are the right ones is an open problem, stated as one, and better alternatives would be welcome.
Three registers run through the text and I have tried never to let them blur. Some statements are definitions — they cannot be false, only useless. Some are theorems, and the sketchy proofs are marked as sketches. Some are postulates — empirical bets that could lose, stated in the open with their boundary conditions attached, precisely so a critic knows where to aim.
Why any of this keeps going
Machines learn. Pieces get absorbed. Absorbed things go quiet. The guess rises to meet the world, the quotient settles at one, and experience should flatten into a permanent hum. It never does — not for people, not for institutions, not for the species.
Because ideals are endpoints, and they get actualized only through real actualizers, always at finite resolution. So every actualization is partial, and the gap between what was aimed at and what got made is a remainder. That remainder is not noise. It is the structured difference the next maker resolves a little further.
The gap is the engine. When the quotient is not one — which is always — that is not the world failing to cooperate. It is the signature of an unfinished actualization, which is the only condition under which anything is still being made.
Reality is complex; Ideation is its angle;
Consciousness is its coherence; Intelligence is its resolution.
