Why Postulates Matter (and How Metaphysics Names the Boundary)

Before doing any math or metaphysics, we need a clean menu of words used the orthodox way. That clarity is what lets a metaphysician contribute without stepping on physics.

If I define “the past” as “that which has happened,” I don’t need an extra postulate to say “the past is 100% certain.” That certainty is a deduction from the definition: if it happened, the probability that it happened is 100%.

By contrast, “The Past is immutable” is not a definition and not provable inside physics; it’s a postulate we adopt to frame meaning.

The Orthodox Anchor: The Past Hypothesis

Inside physics, the Past Hypothesis is a boundary condition: the early universe began in a very low-entropy macrostate. It doesn’t explain why the initial entropy was low; it just posits that it was. That’s orthodox and useful.

What a Metaphysician Adds: The Immutable Past Theory (IPT)

Postulate (IPT): the Past is immutable and contains actuals only—no unrealized possibilities, no uncertainty. This is not a physical system in time; it’s the boundary we name.

What the IPT Postulate Buys You (Shannon Only)

If the Past contains actuals only, then there is no uncertainty about “what happened.” In Claude Shannon’s information terms, all the probability mass sits on one outcome. Using Shannon’s entropy

Plain English: an archive that holds exactly one settled history carries zero information uncertainty about itself.

What Is Undefined (and Why That Matters)

Temperature, frequency, and color belong to systems that evolve in time. The Immutable Past is not such a system. We therefore do not say “zero temperature.” We say temperature is undefined here. That is precise: those concepts don’t apply outside the eternal-now domain where physics runs. For metaphysicians, “undefined” also resonates with the idea of a singular boundary: without definition, no distinctions available.

At the boundary where , we have divergence in the approach (the readout blows up), while at the exact point math withholds a value (undefined). That’s the handoff: physics stays silent there; metaphysics names the boundary.

How to Teach the Ladder

  1. State the postulate cleanly: “The Past is immutable and contains actuals only.”
  2. State the definition you’re using for entropy: Shannon’s information entropy.
  3. Make the deduction in one line: one settled outcome → zero bits of uncertainty.
  4. Mark non-applicability precisely: temperature/frequency/color are undefined at that boundary.
  5. Return to the eternal now for models and hypotheses: compute ratios, take logs, test predictions.

Why Postulates Deserve Real Respect

The Bottom Line

The Past Hypothesis is an orthodox boundary condition inside physics. The Immutable Past Theory is a metaphysical postulate that names the boundary outside physics. They don’t compete; they interlock. Where calculation stops, contemplation begins—and with careful vocabulary, both sides benefit.
