0. The Quiet Prelude—He Loves Her
Before any dance exists, she (the Immutable Past) occupies the origin (0, 0, 0)—a point of zero dimension, temperature, and entropy. He (the Unknowable Future) is the surrounding quantum field: every coordinate except that origin, an omnipresent superposition of possibilities. In this pristine union there is no surprise; nothing distinguishes one micro-configuration from another, so—per Claude Shannon—there is no information. Reality is static potential, a silent “He loves her.”
1. Conditioning: Rotating the Forbidden “−1”
The Divine Essence—the choreographer of the 137th performance—imposes a single constraint: when the Essence stands at +1 (east), the conjugate point −1 (west) must never be real. That prohibition punctures the Future’s seamless field. To restore harmony, the Unknowable Future rotates an idea through the complex plane so that the forbidden coordinate is filled by i2 = −1. This complex insertion does not distort probability—there are no probabilities yet—rather it remodels the stage itself, extruding twin hyperboloids we call Gabriel’s Horns. Only upon this geometric scaffold can spacetime, motion, energy, and entropy arise.
2. Surprise Emerges in the Eternal Now
The horns carve out a membrane—the event horizon—where the Past’s certitude meets the Future’s pure potential. Here, and only here, states become probabilistic. The History Maker (human consciousness) projects expectations across this surface; the Past collapses one actual outcome; the gap between expectation and collapse is surprise. Information, therefore, is the measured mismatch I = −log2p that exists solely in the eternal now—sandwiched between 100 % certainty (she) and 100 % unknowability (he).
3. Energy, Entropy, and the Metric of the Horn
On the Horn’s surface, potential resolves into measurable quantities. Energy is not ontic substance but a bookkeeping scalar that balances configuration changes across the event horizon. Entropy is a count of admissible micro-states consistent with the macro-geometry. Both are emergent properties of the same spatial distortion that birthed information; neither exists in the pristine union outside the horns.
4. Measurement and the Discipline of Forgetting
The Past does not store states; she is the collapsed state. After each collapse she is motionless again, devoid of memory. Quantum experiments dramatize this ascetic amnesia: prepare spin-down electrons, pass them through a Stern–Gerlach oriented along z; the output is pure “down.” Rotate the analyzer to x and half emerge “up,” half “down.” Re-measure along z and the prior certainty is gone—because she never remembered the first collapse. Surprise (and thus information) re-enters with every new basis chosen by the History Maker.
5. Information Resides Only in the Eternal Now
All mnemonic structures—DNA, magnetic domains, neural synapses—are provisional encodings etched on the Horn. They are I(t), time-indexed summaries of surprise. Remove the event horizon and they dissolve into the singularity’s unextended point or the Future’s unfactored wave. Information is therefore a strictly present-tense phenomenon: a ledger of deviations between expectation and collapse, perpetually rewritten at Planck cadence.
6. Implications for the Advanced Student
- Information is local to the Horn. Outside the event horizon probabilities are 0 % or 100 %, so information is null.
- Surprise is necessary. Zero surprise → zero information → a silent universe.
- Memory is provisional. The Past holds nothing; only the Horn “remembers.”
- Energy and entropy are tallies, not primitives, arising from the same spatial rotation that produced the horns.
- Every measurement resets the game: new basis, new probabilities, new surprise.
Seen through this lens, “information” is the audible click whenever the cosmic lock tumbles one notch closer to inevitability—each click a love note from He to She, written on the rim of Gabriel’s Horn.
